Maria Goretti

I have chosen to do my saint report on Maria Goretti. She was born in Corinaldo, Ancona, Italy, near Anzio Nettuno, 20 miles outside of Rome on October 16 1890. Her farm working father moved his family to Ferrier Di Conca,. Her father died from malaria, when Maria was only 9 years old, so her mother struggled to feed and take care of her children. Maria helped her mother around the house though. Marietta was her nickname. At the age of twelve she was already a very pretty young lady. She went to Mass regularly even though it meant a two-hour walk, and she went as often as she could to confession and Holy Communion.

Alexander was an eighteen-year-old-neighbor who had grown up to be nonreligious, rude, bad language, and violent. In 1902, when Maria was only eleven, Alexander, grabbed her from her steps and tried to rape her and stuffed a handkerchief in her mouth, but she still managed to say "No, no It is a mortal sin. If you commit it, you will go to hell!".When Maria said she rather die than submit, Alexander began stabbing her with a knife.

She had to go to the hospital, but before she died she forgave Alexander. She died in twenty-four hours. After she died her forgiveness still didn't end. Maria died July 6, 1902.

Alexander was caught, and sent to jail for thirty years. He said that he had a dream that she was in a garden. In the dream Maria gave him flowers. When he woke, he was a changed man, he stopped being a criminal, and started living a new life. When he was released after 27 years he went directly to Maria's mother to beg her forgiveness, which she gave. She said, "If my daughter can forgive him, who am I to withhold forgiveness ?”

When Maria was declared a saint in 1950, Alexander was there in the St. Peter's crowd to celebrate her canonization. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950 for her purity as model for youth.

She is called a martyr because she fought against Alexander's attempts at sexual assault. The most

Empress Theodora was one of the most influential women of her time. Her husband, Emperor Justinian I, listened to her advice regarding political decisions in the empire. She essentially co-ruled with Justinian, aiding in the rights for women by outlining their rights and expanding upon them. In this way, she was somewhat like an early feminist. During her service to her country as empress, Theodora protected the rights of the serfs and poor. She attended to the rights of prostitutes in particular by closing brothels, creating safe spaces for women, and passing laws to prohibit forced prostitution (presently known as rape). Additionally, she passed laws that expanded the rights of women in divorce and redacted an unfair law that had allowed women to be put to death for committing adultery. Finally, she protected persecuted Monophysites, building churches that served as refuges.…

Alexandra has been working all this time to give Emil the freedom to do whatever he wants after their father passed away. Emil’s death gave her the green light to finally think about her needs.
