Marilyn Monroe has held many stereotypes and scandals about herself, but she has changed many people’s views on the film-making industry. Marilyn Monroe has impacted the roles of women in the movie making business and has left behind a legacy that overcame her difficult childhood and struggles in her adult life.
Marilyn Monroe was known to have a difficult childhood that affected her greatly later in her adult life and was one of the reasons she had many psychological problems. She was born as Norma Jean Baker on June 1st, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. She was born to Edward Mortson and Gladys Monroe, who were not
Her father was a mechanic who died in a motorcycle accident when she was only three years old. Her mother was a film technician who suffered frequent mental breakdowns due to her severe paranoid schizophrenia. Because of this, Marilyn Monroe couldn’t stay in her care, so she stayed in a series of twelve foster homes in which she was was sexually abused several times ("Marilyn Monroe." American Decades). This constant abuse and lack of stability created a lack of trust and mental problems. She was noted to be very beautiful from a young age, but very lonely and did not receive very much schooling and ended up dropping out when she was only fifteen years old 9 ("Marilyn Monroe Biography." After her failed marriage and her going into adulthood way to fast, she appeared in many movies and modeling jigs. But, while all this was going on, she had a busy personal life. Miss Monroe then later married a New York Yankee centerfielder in 1954 named Joe DiMaggio after her first divorce with Jimmy Dougherty that ended because of the lack of communication. She divorced DiMaggio not even a full year later, but there were rumors he still loved her and they still had a connection shortly before she died ("Marilyn Monroe." American Decades.). During the filming of another movie in 1956, Monroe got married to the playwright Arthur Miller. She was so devoted to him, she even converted to his religion two days after their marriage. They worked together on a few films following the next few years, then got divorced in 1961. Shortly after their failed marriage, Miss Monroe went to a mental hospital because of insomnia and her addiction to sleeping pills. She was known to always be terrified that she would end up like her mother with severe schizophrenia.
