Assume you have been appointed as a marketing consultant for Jollibee. As part of the international expansion program, the management wants you to prepare a report to identify marketing opportunities. The report should cover the following information:

a) Identify three potential markets for expansion

Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) is banking on franchising and overseas expansion to continuously boost its earnings in the long run. The aggressive expansion program is in line with doubling the company’s earnings in 5 years, company officials said.

For its overseas expansion, CEO Ernesto Tanmantiong said the quick-service restaurant chain plans to expand its global footprint by putting up stores in Malaysia, Myanmar, Europe and Japan “after five years because we need to focus on China and the US.” JFC is also branching out in Canada next year while the company is still studying prospects in Indonesia, one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia.
The potential markets for expansion are the following:
Three Options for Expansion
Papua New Guinea- Raising the Standard
New Entrant into 3 store fast food chain
Tingzon offered to put up all capital required
Hong Kong- Expanding the Base
3 Store already established, possibility of a 4th one.

4th store location high traffic but few Filipinos
California-Supporting the Settlers
Success in Guam led them to believe US had potential

Jollibee was able to build its dominant position in fast food in the Philippines for a number of reasons. The company had its roots in the food industry in the Philippines early on with the ice cream business, so the entry barrier into fast food was very low. It was a smooth transition from being ice cream only to fast food after the oil crisis in 1977. This transition was also aided by using a recipe that was developed in the Philippines and was appealing to the markets that were serviced by Jollibee’s. This would eventually be a contributing factor in the competitive advantage Jollibee held over McDonald’s in it’s the Philippins. Jollibee also built itself around the solid foundation of the “Five F’s”. Friendliness, flavorful food, fun atmosphere, flexibility and focus on families summed up Jollibee’s philosophy and allowed for Jollibee to become a recognizable brand throughout the Philippines. The operations and marketing strategies employed by the company can be credited with establishing a dominant position through the previously mentioned actions.…

Joint Ventures and franchises have been advantageous strategic approaches to business for some time affording companies specific benefits for advancing or gaining market share. A joint venture (JV) is an agreement to begin a commercial enterprise that generally benefits both parties taking advantage of other companies’ existing, infrastructure, intellectual capital, customer base, market reach/research, credibility, responsiveness, etc. (Hull, 2013). There are few limitations to JV’s and the benefits are only restricted by the agreements that you reach, therefore JV’s are an obvious choice for businesses that are looking to grow yet lack the resources to effectively do so.…

Jollibee Food Corporation is a food empire with interests to American fast food (burgers, fries, fried chicken, etc.) including pizza (Greenwich), grilled chicken (Mary’s Chicken) and Chinese Fast food (Chowking). Jollibee used franchising to rapidly expand its business and achieve market penetration. Jollibee’s first franchise opened in 1980. In the same year its sales boomed to P24million. Its closest competitor, McDonald’s had almost 200 stores. More than 43 percent of Jollibee’s 302 stores were franchise owned. Franchising is the force which provides the strength to the Jollibee food empire. Investing in a Jollibee franchise requires a low of P10-15 million to a high of P20-25 million. JFC is a good business to those entrepreneurs who can afford their franchise fee until the management faced a problem between the two franchisees that are choosing the same location.…
