(I am Australian)
Good morning ladies and gentleman, I proudly welcome you, your family and friends to this citizenship ceremony today. Firstly I would like to pay my respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of this land. The mayor Tom Tate for being here with us today. Our deputy mayor Donna gates. We thank you for coming to see who we are and what we can share with you. What does it mean to be an Australian? Being Australian means having Australian values like mateship. Living in a diverse community that shares new things every day and having the right of freedom and equality. I am very honoured in this new year of 2016 to begin a change in your life with a humble welcome.
Mateship is a value that is
highly needed. In Australia mateship is a cultural idiom that embodies equality, loyalty and friendship. This value has been an important part of the Australian society since the First World War. In the song We've Done Us Proud by Slim Dusty is states “Side by side, hand in hand, we've lived and died”, which shows the true mateship shown by the ANZACS. The ANZAC soldier’s legend also won the respect of others by showing the value of mateship while risking their lives for their future generations in the battlefields which are us today. But no, this value hasn’t been outdated nor forgotten. In today’s society it can be seen this value being shared throughout many cultures. For example the ill ride with you campaign shows the value of mateship. For example Australian citizens help their fellow Muslim brothers and sisters after a terrorist attack which shows the great value of mateship.
In our country you have to right to freedom and equality. The freedom to have a voice. The freedom to follow your own religion. The right to an education. The write to work.
Over the decades Australia has become one of the most multicultural countries in the world having 260 languages spoken throughout the country. We have are such a diverse community which is alive and dynamic and proud, a mixture of tribes in our cities that excite, educate and enrich our governments, our people and our media. We are a democratic country that speaks and listens, and adapts and alters to the needs of each individual. “And from all the lands on earth we come”, is an extract from the song I am Australian. This quote from the song expresses Australia’s Multiculturalism by saying that we all come from all the lands on the earth.
I am, you are, we are Australian.
