The next morning, Mathilde awoke to see the Necklace lying on her bedside table. Immediately, all the wonderful memories of the previous evening came flooding back to her. What a marvelous experience it was, she thought, smiling with excitement. “Now the whole city of Paris will know who I am and love me,” she grinned. And all over her fantastic success was all because of the small diamond Necklaces. But what she was forgetting was that the necklace was not hers, and she was expected to give it back as soon as possible. However, this fact easily slipped out of her mind due to her success.

Mathilde was stunned and she started sobbing and ran home. When she arrived at her house, she ran into her bed and sobbed away while all of reality seeped into her brain. For the next a week she did not leave the house and she survived off of a quarter of a slice of bread a day. (The bread began to rot towards the end.) She had ripped up both of her dress and threw out all her make.
She also did not bathe in forever and she looked very ugly. The only beautiful thing she had now was the necklace that Madame Forestier had lent her. She always kept it around her neck. But she finally was out of bread after a week and decide to go out and buy some more. She bought her loaf of bread and went straight for home. But she was quickly stopped by a familiar face. It was Madame Forestier! “Is that you? Mathilde Loisel? Is that really you? And is that my necklace that you haven’t returned to me yet on your neck? What have you become? You disgust me Mathilde.
