it’s meaning and value. A similar theme that is presented in the three story is that “You should be grateful to be who you are and what you have right now.”
The story ”The Most Dangerous Game” presents the theme throughout symbolism and characterization. Symbolism presents the theme to the reader because “the hunters and the huntees” as stated in the text symbolizes the real characterization in the world, the poor v.s. the rich. The connection that the author is trying to make is that some people in life are bored as a hunter, but Rainsford is made to be a hunter. In the text, it stated that “This hot weather is making you soft, Whitney. Be a realist. The world is made of two classes-the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters.” This symbolizes how the world is separated just like the rich and the poor and the hunters and the huntees. The rich wouldn’t care about how the poor felt or the way they are treated. In Rainsford’s perspective, he would fall into the rich class. Rainsford said, “ You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?” This supported the symbolization between the story and real life. Throughout the story, characterization is another craft move that helps leading to the understanding of the theme. In the beginning of the story, Rainsford is arrogant and act in a selfish way, not caring about how others felt. As stated before, Rainsford doesn't care about the feeling that the jaguar has. Rains ford dismiss the possibility that animals have the capacity to feel fear when they are hunted. He said, “Bah! They've no understanding.” However, as toward the end of the story, Rainsford starts to feel scared when he is being chased and facing danger for survivals. He experience psychological fears of himself. He is satistified. In the end of the passage, he felt how a hunter felt by feeling how they felt when chased by hunter and the struggles. “Then he ran for his life.” This shows that Rainsford really felt like a hunter when he is in their shoes. Both craft moves leads to a moral message that is presented throughout the story.
“To make us wish that we were in his place.” As stated in the poem “Richard Cory”, Richard Cory is a gentleman from sole to crown that everyone admire to become him. But the irony that is implied in the story less to the central message of the story. Been the person that everyone admires leads Richard Cory to suicide. Richard Cory is stressed from everyone whom they admire. On the other hand, the poor were trying to become like Richard Cory. Admiring his richness and frame. But what they don't know that everyone have their own story. They are not appreciating the live that they have right now. Richard Cory ended up killing himself. This craft move contributes to the significance of the theme. The text stated that, “That night, he pulled a bullet through his head.” This indicated how although Richard Cory enjoyed wealth and social position and was much envied by the working poor, he is the one who commits . It shows how appearances are deceiving and the poor doesn't know that his life is so empty and unbearable. For, when he comes to town he is alienated from the citizens because of their perception of him as "imperially slim" and "schooled in every grace," and far above them in stature, so much so that no one really communicates with him.
A similar craft is shared in the story “The Necklace” and “Richard Cory” which is irony.
The irony that is implied in the story is that in the fact borrowing the necklace was what the main character, Mathilde hoped would help her into the life she coveted, yet it was also what put her into a life of poverty. In the story, it stated that “ She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy and luxury. She suffered from the poorness of her house, from its mean walls, worn chairs, and ugly curtains. All these things, of which other women of her class would not even have been aware, tormented and insulted her.” This shows how Mathilde has a poor family background while compared to the rich classes for the women in that time period. The reality of Mathilde’s situation is that she is neither wealthy nor part of the social class of which she feels she is a deserving member, but Mathilde does everything in her power to make her life appear different from how it is. This is similar to “The Most Dangerous Game” because it shows how people and living things are always characterize by destiny. As the story progresses, Mathilde lost her necklace that was borrowed from a high amount of money and paid their whole life for it just for the frame that Mathilde tried to get, by fitting into the wealthy class. This women works for years and years to buy an identical necklace, only to find out the one she borrowed was a fake. In the story, it stated that “I brought you another one just like it. And for the last ten years we have been paying for it. You realised it wasn't easy for us; we had no money. . . . Well, it's paid for at last, and I'm glad indeed.” This shows the ironic of the plot because the money that they are working whole life turned out to be fake while the one that they gave was real. When they can just live in a family, and forget about the frame and the society position, they would have live happily. But they thought about the money that might bring the
happiness to them and decide to be one of them. They ended up wasting their whole life fighting for what turned out to be nothing. She is not grateful for the life that they have right now and made the mistake in her life.
The theme for which the three story all presents to the reader is that “ You should be grateful to be who you are and what you have right now.” The three text all shows that there are many things that you can judge without being in their shoe. This which leads to the understanding that people show be thankful for what they are being now. This is shows in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” because Rainsford is not really appreciating of who he is not. He thinks that the animals are not worth anything. However, when he is running for his life and facing dangers, he felt how they felt like. He treasures himself more. The story stated that “He knew his pursuer was coming; he heard the padding sound of feet on the soft earth, and the night breeze brought him the perfume of the general's cigarette.” Rainsford felt the dangers that hunters face when being chased by hunters. He cares about how others felt and treasures himself more. Rainsford is nothing if not a survivor. In the poem “Richard Cory”, the workers and the lower classes admires wanted to be like someone like Richard Cory. However, they think that money can bring Richard Cory’s happiness. The poem says “In fine, we thought that he was everything. To make us wish that we were in his place.” However, he was not happy at all. They think that their life is miserable but so does Richard Cory. Everyone should stay be happy of what they have right now. You cant expect a lot. Although the workers have to work hard, at least they are happy. So this presented that always be thankful for right now and don't expect more from your selfishness. In addition to this, the story, “The Necklace” presents a similar theme. For example, when Mathilde tried to fit in with the wealthy and rich society, she made the mistake of her life. Mathilde's snobbery and stubborn pride lead her to a consequence.
The text stated that, “What would have happened if she had never lost those jewels? Who knows? Who knows? How strange life is, how fickle! How little is needed to ruin or to save!” Mathilde believes that life is fickle, but it is she herself who has acted capriciously and brought about her own dire fate. Shortly after her reverie, she meets Madame Forestier again and learns that the necklace had been worthless. She wanted a better life than what she is right now. But this leads her to pay up her whole if working for nothing. The three text all shares a similar theme because the characters thinks that other people have a better/worser life than them. They already have the best that they deserve.
In conclusion, a theme is apperaed in every story. Theme occurs in the story like constant heart beat from the beginning of the story to the end. The three text all presents about the gratefulness heart that you should always have as being who you are. You wouldn't know the feeling of being someone else until you step in their shoe. A grateful heart is a beginning of greatness. It is an expression of humility. In the three story, Rainsford, Richard Cory’s workers and Mathilde are all experiencing the selfishness and detestable quality in anyone. They are not thinking about the others but just by the way they show it. They felt regret and would rather get back to their old life. It shows the consequences that they got for no thinking about others and treated them like trash. You can’t be grateful for what you have received, then be thankful for what you have been spared.
