Matilda grew up in the middle of the war without
a father and no one to look up to but her mom. While she’s in school her teacher Mr. Watts introduces her to a book called Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. After listening to Mr. Watts read Great expectations Matilda soon starts to relate to the book as her conscious. The ideas she comes across in the book help her differentiate right from wrong. From main character from the novel Pip, Matilda learns how to be independent and handle her own problems just from reading about pips actions. In a way just the though of Pip helps Matilda maintain the the desire to live. Even though Pip is fictional, he acts as her savior. When Matilda was clinging to the log to save her life she said “What is a savior? The only one I knew of went by the name of Mr. Jaggers. And so it was obvious for me to name my savior, this log, after the man who had saved Pips life”. For a long time she clung to her savior Mr. Jaggers, not knowing if she would live or die. They way she escribes the aggressive moving water becoming vast empty river was part of her realizing she was being rescued by what she thought of as Mr.Jaggers.
By the end of the book Matilda is staying with her dad in the city of london. All of her friends and are left behind on the tropical island on which she lived on but she is forced to carry on with the memories. Now that she's with her dad in the city, everything that she learned in Mr.Watts class is coming in handy. He used to teach them about what its like to live in a world off the island. She's around tall buildings, traffic, stores and the basic urban life. Her school life is suddenly different, instead of the the whole class being african american most of the kids in the london schools are white.Matilda is far away from the island, the memories of what she saw with her own eyes still haunt her. She cant think about the island and everything she learned without remembering the hared sight of what happened to her mom. As hard as it is for her to think about it, Matildas dad has yet to hear anything about her. “ I had never wanted to know what disappointment felt like, neither did I want my dad to know” (231). Matilda is afraid that her dad will take the news of her mom to hard and will fall into a depression. She is also scared of the thought that he will blame her death on her. When she eventually tells him he is saddened and cry’s.
Seeing how Matilda handles her problems and realizing how mentally strong of a person she is, is extremely inspiring to the reader. To see such a young girl be so brave in such dangerous situations. Matildas growth is shown through her extraordinary adventures of living on the island. It is clear that she has learned so much from Pip and her mentor, Mr.Watts. Her connection with Pip shows that if you can relate enough to the book, then you can gain key knowledge on how to deal with your problems.
