Creation Myths Exam

1. This depends on how you define creation and evolution. Sometimes creation just simply means that there is a creator, others times it could mean that the object has been created, and how it got to be that way. The word myth to a lot of people means a story that is not true, meaning to them it is more fantasy than it is reality. Myth could also be defined as any real or fictional story that appeals to certain groups of people by surrounding their cultural beliefs and ideas. A myth to me doesn’t only express human emotion but also human thought. Going by my interpretation of the definition of a myth we can say that evolution can be seen as a creation myth, however, I’m not saying evolution isn’t …show more content…
true. In the creation myth The Ages of Man, it says that humans have evolved and become worse with each generation. This is an example of the creation of man, and how man grew and evolved through the generations. Some people argue that evolution is not a creation myth because myths do not change but evolution does overtime. I think that the concept behind evolution does not change, meaning that the humans evolved from a form lesser than themselves has not changed at all. I also think that myths do change overtime. Not a lot of myths support evolution because they were thought up before evolution ever came into the picture. I think an example of this would be Genesis 1 to 3. God creates the heavens and the Earth, then Adam and Eve come along and are doing fine until the serpent comes along and deceives Eve. The serpent and Human God had created were able to think for themselves showing us good and evil. Evolution is a creation myth because it provides us with the story of how our society came to be what it is. An example of this would be the myth Sedna. Sedna betray her father, therefore as punishment he decided to throw her out to sea, he cut off her fingers and as they fell into the ocean, they created the sea creatures. The sea animals then became food for the Inuit people, if it weren’t for the ocean animals the Inuit people could have starved to death.

The Matriarchal Theory is very old. This is a myth that focuses on the prehistory of man. This theory states that early cultures and societies were ruled by women. There are many who support this theory and many who do not. This was back in the time when there was no marriage or family. People lived in groups, they depended on hunting animals and fruits they would find. When man and woman would meet there was a union between them and the woman would end up bearing a child. Then the groups would separate and the child be born and they would not know their mothers or fathers. Women would have these children and nobody understood why. They ended up worshipping women because fertility is so important. Men did not like this and decided to rewrite women’s role in society just so that the men can be the dominate figure. An example of Matriarchal Theory is Osiris, Isis, and Horus. Osiris became the king of Egypt, eventually marrying his sister, Isis. Set, who is there one brother, was always jealous of his brother Osiris. Set ends up killing Osiris, and cuts him into pieces and throws him in the River. Isis then goes and collects all the pieces of her dead husband and reassembles him, once that was completed she breathed life back into him again and he was alive. They both conceived a child then named Horus. In this myth Isis is the leader of Egypt, after her husband was killed, she decided to bring him back, showing love, and devotion of woman to man. They then had a child and she was very nurturing to him as a mother should be. The Egyptians worshipped Isis, and all women because of their qualities. Daughters in Egypt would inherit the throne and not the son. This however will start to change over time. Since Isis married her brother Osiris, I would think that brother and sister relationships started just to make sure their child would
rule.
