The Notebook is one of my favorite love movies of all time. The reason I love this movie so much is because that main characters Noah and Allie go through so many trials and finally end up together in the end. This movie I feel shows me how strong their love for each other really was and I now feel as if it is meant to be it will always find a way. Looking at the movie as a reference to get a better understanding of how lifespan development works, I realized that most of the trials that Noah and Allie went though were part of stages of development. The theory of stages of development was created by Erik Erikson, he believes that we go though certain stages in our life and if we do not get passed them properly we will end up with underdeveloped skills in our lives. The Notebook has many different stages that the main characters go though such as, stage eight, integrity vs. despair, stage five, identity vs. identity confusion, and stage six, intimacy vs. isolation.…
From the day Vincent was born, he had always been concidered as highly flawed, and as an 'invalid'. His parents were planning on carrying on the family name with their first born child by calling Vincent, Anton, after his father, Antonio. However, once finding out that Vincent was prone to illness' such as neurological disorder, manic depression, attention deficit disorder, heart failure, and was expected to live for only 30.2 years, Vincent's father felt that he wasn't worthy of the family name, and decided to call him Vincent Anton instead. Mother and Father, Maria and Antonio had a second child, who Antonio felt was worthy of the family name, because unlike Vincent who was conceived the natural way, Anton was born through genetic engineering. As the two boys grew up, Anton was always considered superior to Vincent as he was always upstaging him at everything they did. Until one day, when the two boys played a game of chicken. Like usual, Anton was expecting Vincent to turn around and swim back to shore. However, no matter how much effort he put into trying to beat his brother, Anton and Vincent were neck and neck the whole swim. Anton was confused at how Vincent still had the energy to swim, and finally Anton wasn't able to go on any longer and he gave up. Passing out and starting to drown, Vincent saved his brother's life. For the first time in their lives, Vincent was better than Anton at something. Even though everybody believed that he wasn't good enough to acheive his goals, Vincent now believed that he could achieve anything that he set his mind to. Vincent decided to run away from home and he got a job as a janitor at Gattaca. This was his first glimpse of Gattaca, and he liked what he saw.…

“The Film Gattaca Presents a World Destroyed by the pursuit of our perfection. Discuss.” Andrew Niccol’s film Gattaca does present a world where the world has been destroyed by human’s pursuit of perfection. It is the characters in the movie which show this, Vincent, Jerome & Irene. These three characters illustrate a world to the viewer, a world were perfection means everything. It is this I intend to illustrate for you on how Andrew Niccol’s film shows us a world that has been destroyed by the human pursuit of perfection. Vincent is considered an invalid in the world of Gattaca, because he wasn’t created the valid way. The valid way is done through altering the genetic code of a person, a person engineered to be perfect. Vincent however is anything but perfect; he has a 99% of Heart Failure and is presumed to die at the age of 30. The world of Gattaca is one based solely on perfection, this is shown by the selection criteria of the Gattaca program, in which only the perfect enter, valids. This shows the audience on how intent the world of Gattaca is on being perfect, with the creation of a ‘perfect’ civilization. The world is destroyed; there is a new underclass that is discriminated upon and not given a chance to succeed in the world. One scene in particular which shows this is when the Investigator has all the Invalids lined up for testing, we see darkness which shows the audience that these invalid’s live a dark life. It is this new underclass which shows us the destruction of the world in Gattaca all for the pursuit of our own perfection. On the other Hand we have Jerome Morrow who is an valid. Jerome has the perfect helix so to speak, with an off the scale IQ and a heart of an ox. Jerome is an example of how the world’s people are with their pursuit to perfection. Jerome lives under the burden of perfection which is a burden which many in the Gattaca world would be under, the burden to be the very b...…
It seemed years ago that I was brought to this camp, brought to a life without my family, a life where I only cared for myself, a life where I was not truly living. It seemed I lived in this camp my whole life, it was hard to remember that it had only been 5 months.…

Gladiator is set during the peak of the Roman Empire. The story revolves around Maximus (Russel Crowe), one of the best General's in Emperor Marcus Aurelius' (Richard Harris) army. The emperor is dying and makes his wishes known that Maximus be his successor instead of his son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) . As you might expect, going through life with a name like Commodus, and then being passed over by his own father doesn't look good. He orders the death of Maximus, who manages to escape and become a gladiator while hiding his identity. He will attempt to return to Rome to ultimately seek his revenge. This film is directed by Ridley Scott who is a great English film director and producer. The story is written by David Franzoni who is an American screenwriter. This film a historical epic movie that is base on the Roman Empire.…
Plato’s allegory of the cave is a symbol/metaphor for the contrasts between ideas and what we perceive as reality. The ideas that we think and are set on, becomes our reality even if it may not be the truth. Plato’s allegory of the cave is an extended metaphor about prisoners who mistake sensory knowledge for the truth. Plato claimed that knowledge gained through the senses is no more than opinion and that it cannot be the ‘truth’. He says that most humans live in world of shadows, where we don’t see the ‘reality’ of ideas, which is the ultimate form, the reason and the truth.…

While the most common case is that of matrices over the real or complex numbers, all these definitions can be given for matrices over any commutative ring. However, in this case the condition for a square matrix to be invertible is that its determinant is invertible in the ring, which in general is a much stricter requirement than being nonzero. The conditions for existence of left-inverse resp. right-inverse are more complicated since a notion of rank does not exist over rings.…

In the Matrix series there seems is quite a bit of philosophy. It has principles like Plato’s cave, Socrates’ “know thyself” and of course free will and fate. In the matrix your mind is being entertained or kept busy to be blinded from the real world. This keeps you from waking up and “freeing your mind.” In one particular part Neo is offered 2 pills by Morpheus. This tends to imply that Neo always has a choice. He asked the question “Do you want be free?” Once Neo chooses what pill take he is brought out of the Matrix and into the “real world.” The real world is quite different from the matrix, but in the real world Neo finds out that he is “the One,” a messiah of sorts. But Neo does not believe in fate because he doesn’t like the idea that he is in control of his own life. In another part of the movie the oracle says “Don’t worry about the vase.” Neo then turns and knocks over the vase. He apologizes for doing so but she gives the possibility that if she hadn’t said anything would he have still knocked it over? I don’t think any of us really like the idea that we are not in control of our own lives, but how else are we suppose to explain the coincidences in life? Predestination and fate have to be the answer, right?…
The science fiction film Blade Runner is about cinematic vision. In the beginning of the film, a difference between the lens and mirror is shown. A close up of an eye is shown with flames which symbolizes the camera that has just shot the scene. Eye imagery occurs throughout the movie being the film’s obsessive exploration of the theme. The protagonist, Rick Deckard uses an “Esper machine,” a high tech apparatus, to dissect a photo left by a replicant ( read: a clone). This Esper machine can interpret any photo as if you were within it. It allows for a photo to show in three dimensions. The Esper machine finds the replicant within the photo and Rick is able to track her down.…
