Matt Miller's Is Persuasion Dead?
In “Is Persuasion Dead?, ” Matt Miller effectively argues that persuasion is dead and points out several occasions where persuasion is believed take place, but he see’s them as more of agreements. He gives political examples and feels that “persuasion just isn’t relevant”(Miller) with politicians line of work. In contrast, he mentions a book he read that persuaded him to believe what he read and questions whether or not he can be completely sure the book’s information is accurate. However, I don’t completely agree with his argument that persuasion is dead considering we use persuasion on a daily basis.
From his perspective, most people stand by their initial standpoint in an argument in which I agree. He makes a good point by saying that “Alienation
is the only intelligent response… ”(Miller). Although he makes a point of people ignoring what they don’t want to hear, persuasion is still alive when people are convinced enough to have a change of thought. All in all, Miller’s position on the existence of persuasion is very clear as he believes it can be fixed.
