Hope from a distance, is novel that shows how strong the potential of family bonds
can take an individual. An example of that bond would have to be through the only link that Jack
had with his deceased mother, the sodalite stone. Jake is described as a shy pushover however, he
admits to the sodalite stone giving him will power to look out for his brother just because his
mother hinted that it would do so. The way the author plays out the struggle that Sam
experiences with his mental disorder gives the reader hope. This hope is mustered from Jake’s
mother claiming that the stone will give the holder the ability to create harmony and
communication with others, something that Sam will have to do in order to make new friends
once he leaves town. My interpretation is it is not the stone that allures to the strength of Jack
dealing with his brother’s difficult situation but that it is his mother belief in him and wants him
to pass that faith to his brother. It is this faith that the mother shares with them who is so far away
looking down on them that really contributes to the title of this story, Hope from a distance.
Right thing to say
Right thing to say by Kathy Page is a story about understanding the full meaning of
commitment. The story’s use of wedding vows really stresses that each individual in a
relationship should be prepared to take on any challenge anytime. When one begins to fall the
other should rise to support his/her significant other in order the build trust and create longevity.
Don realizes this in his relationship with Marla where he remembers the day he chose to marry
her. He stresses the reality of their situation with his wife possibly containing a disease passed
down from her mother even though it came as unexpected. It is a valuable lesson for those trying
to rush into
