Chandler Muriel Bing, known as Matthew Perry, grew into stardom by his role on Friends. During his time on the popular series, Perry had also been apart of several movies. A few of these popular movies were “Fools Rush In”, “Almost Heroes”, “The Whole Nine Yards”, and it’s sequel “The Whole Ten Yards” in 2004 (Bio Perry). Throughout the T.V. series Perry had battled addictions to alcohol and prescription medications (Bio Perry). In an interview with E-Online Perry spoke up about his addiction. In the interview he said, “I was in the white-hot flame of fame. The six of us were just everywhere all the time. From an outsider’s perspective, it would seem like I had it all. It was actually a very lonely time for me because I was suffering from alcoholism. It was going on before Friends, but it’s a progressive disease (Grossberg 1).” After the Friends series, Perry has been in popular movies like “Numb”, “Birds of America”, and “17 Again” (Bio Perry). Currently Matthew Perry is in a new T.V. series “The Odd Couple” and is a “passionate advocate of drug courts (Grossberg 1)”

After the T.V. show ended the viewers could no longer see the characters that they had grown to love and see their friendship. “Were they still friends?” was a question that was thought between fans of the T.V. series. In an interview with ET Online, Matt LeBlanc said, “We don’t get to see each other as much as we used to, but whenever they get back together it’s just like old times (Flanigan 1).” He says that, “It’s like no time has elapsed you know, but when they get back together it’s like it never stopped (Flanigan 1).” Even though the cast members have gone their own ways onto bigger acting projects, they still have a strong connection from their times on Friends, which was a total of ten

In the passage “The First Night”, A Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality, the author John Perry introduces one of the main characters Gretchen Weirob, in her hospital room. Weirob is a philosophy professor who is laying in her death bed due to a motorcycle incident. Accompanying her is her life time long friend Sam Miller and her former student Dave Cohen three days before she passed. The author makes it clear that Weirob is looking to be persuaded that personal survival after death is possible. “I don’t know why God created us if these few years of toll and torment are the end of it.”(John Perry page 1) these words were told by Miller explaining how he is at peace with himself because he knows that their souls will be reunited after…

Perry and Dick are very two opposite people Dick is a very smart man who exudes confidence and malice who grow up in a stable home with two parents, he didn’t have the wealthiest family but he was supported. Unlike Perry who grew in a very unstable home having to switch between his parents because his father was a women beater and his mother was an alcoholic, his parents could barely support him so he was put in an orphanage where he was constantly beaten by the nuns who were to take care of him. Even though Dick grew up in a better environment he still came out a malicious and selfish person, even though Perry wasn’t a saint he had never aspired to be a criminal his dream was to become a Sinatra type singer and have a show on the Las Vegas strip, he believed he was smarty and artistic. One very important factor that Perry and Dick had in common was that they were both in major motorized accidents. Dick was in a severe car accident where his skull was almost cracked in half, while Perry was in a major motorcycle accident where his legs were ripped to shreds. These injuries are a very important factor later in the book. Throughout the book many examples of how Perry and Dick differ, such as the fact that Perry wanted to purchase black stockings to hide their faces but stated that there would be no need since there would be no witness left alive. After their arrest and their confessions Dick blamed everything and Perry while Perry was regretful and sorry he even said “I’d apologize, but to who.” What was also shown in the book was that Dick was a pedophile who preyed on young girls he even planned to rape Nancy until Perry threatened to shoot him. It shows how out of the two the more conscientious was Perry by far. Perry even when as far to say he despised Dick especially when he told him how stupid it was to steal razor blades, Dick’s response exemplifies his…

In Russell Banks novel, Trailerpark, there are many different stories that compare different kinds of people, and their personalities. In almost every story there is always a main character that has a problem. He uses his stories to show the reality of life, and all the bad things that come along with it. In Banks story, Comfort, he says, “ Its not so much that you will say things when drunk that you’d never say when sober, as much as you will try to say things you’d ordinarily know simply could not be said. It’s your judgment about the sayable that goes, not your inhibition”(124). Banks is using this story to show how people sometimes communicate when they’re drinking, and how people use drinking to talk about something that they normally wouldn’t talk about.…

Alcoholism is shown in a very powerful but controversial way. Throughout the film it is indicated that Lilly suffers from sever alcohol abuse. It is suggested that, because of her drinking, Lilly is part of the reason why Rachel was sexually abused. She was never totally there; she was supposedly always suspected to be under the influence and leaving Rachel in the care of her step-dad, Arnold. The film is moving when dealing with this issue because it is actually the addiction that starts to bring the family back together. Georgia supports Lilly through her lowest of times. This is evident during one scene, when Lilly is drinking the alcohol. Georgia enters with a tray of food and drink, saying she needs to eat sometime. Upon entering Georgia states: “Ohh you cut your hair.” Lilly responds with, “It was getting in the way of my drinking.” This quote shows the desperate acts that alcohol can make you do and later regret. Unfortunately an alcohol addiction is not as easy as just surrendering and saying you will not drink again, especially when you are drunk at the time. However, Lilly decides to take a major step into the recovery process. Although this part of the film is moving and touching in some ways, it is portrayed in an unrealistic way, also. However, the audience is left slightly happy with the…
