Myths and legends have been apart of maori culture for thousands of years. They are set in the past and often have to do with the supernatural. In traditional times the stories were used to remember important events or teach important lessons.
These myths present ideas about the creation of the universe, gods and people, the weather, the stars and the moon, the fish of the sea, the birds of the forest and the forest themselves. Majority of these myths are well known throughout new zealand and but also over much of polynesia aswell.

Thoughout the mythologys, it is clear he had a role in providing society with examples of appropriate behaviour.. He highlighted morals, and behaviours from which people can learn and apply.
In their society the Maui traditions are considered true statements and the events that occurred in the myths are evidence of his existence. The whole legal system was based on Mauis values and the people adhered to these principles rather than a set of rules, they accepted these stories as fact all up until European missionaries and settlers came to Aotearoa (new zealand) and brought their own belifs and religions.
these values and principles adopted from these myths were important for people to survive harmoniously within their environment, not only spiritually but also physically. It was and still is very important for these values, laws and principles are passed down from one generation to the next. In saying
