Topic: Mayan Culture
General Purpose: To Inform
I. When I thought about this speech at the beginning I thought to myself what would be an interesting culture to research?
A. Well after a little googling… I decided to go with the culture that is considered to be the Jewel of all ancient American cultures and one of the greatest cilvilations, the Maya culture.
B. I had some questions about the Maya Culture and they go as follows…
C. Who were the Maya people? What were they all about?
D. What did they bring to society? How did they function and how was their society structured?
E. Were they like the other Indian Cultures that were around in that period of time?
II. The Maya culture was developed between 3,000 B.C. and 2,000 B.C. and it was located in present day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras with the majority being around Guatemala.
A. The Maya culture was set up into four different class structures.
1. The nobility, who were viewed to be intermediaries between the gods and the people in which they ruled over and they were seen as being semi divine their selves.
2. The Priesthood, these individuals were scholarly educated people who could read and write and whom were ranked right along with the nobility due to the Maya people being very religious people and the priests being believed to be able to talk to the gods and goddesses. They told the people when to plant their crops when to do the religious sacrifices all the way down to who to sacrifice.
3. The Common People, farmers, architects, stonecutters, and carpenters, who did hard manual labor to support themselves and the people who ruled over them.
4. The Slaves, these were the prisoners, orphans, the children of people who were already slaves and the people that were caught stealing.
III. The Maya people were pretty smart and worked with the things that were indigenous to their area to craft the things that they needed.
