The Mayflower Compact was a framework of government that was signed by 41 English colonists, and it was signed on the “Mayflower” on November 11 of 1620. The purpose of this documents was to halt the disagreement between Puritans and Pilgrims in Plymouth. It was an agreement to arrange for a government in the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. Line 4 in the compact states, “do by these presents solemnly and mutually in the presence of God”, which shows that they basically swore an oath to god to create a civil body. It was written as if it was a prayer. The compact was an oath to create a “good” colony with laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, office, etc. This compact was the basis of government in the Plymouth colony for ten years. We know today that these documents are what made America what it is today.
