Friends, however have existed since the beginning of time. “No man is an island” written by John Donne states many quotes that involves a deep meaning to them. “No man is an island entire by itself; every man is a piece of the continent”. When friendships are dissolved, the consequences can be devastating. In Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics - VIII – IX he explains how humans learn from one another, and that humans are innately social animals (Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics - VIII – IX, 148-149). Friendships are required in life learn about values. Without friends, humans would not be able to learn such values from each other, nor will they be able to confide in each other. Having friends in life allow for the mutual growth of both parties. Rebecca Traister writes in her article “What Women Find in Friends That They May Not Get from Love” her experiences with her friend Sara. Traister says, “In each other, we found respite, recognition, a shared eagerness to relax, take stock and talk about it all.” (Sara Traister, “What Women Find in Friends That They May Not Get from Love, 1), going on to say this relationship was mutual where they benefited from each other’s company. As they both grew together over time, much like Aristotle suggests is the value of friendship. Humans life are not fulfilled unless friends are there to support each other. As Traister says, “For many women, friends are our primary partner through life” (Sara Traister, “What Women Find in Friends That They May Not Get from Love, 5). Friendships promote social and emotional stability on both ends of the relationship (Latfiyya). But many people with mental and/or physical illnesses do not get as many chances to form relationships because of seclusion, environment, and lack of social skills. These skills and opportunities can be provided through family, caretakers, and community. Friendships offers stability and fulfills social needs that each individual needs to function normally. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, all patients had a form of social isolation, but when McMurphy came along with his free mind, he cleared the fog from everyone’s minds and helped them to communicate with each other. Important dimensions of friendships are mutuality, rights, responsibilities, obligations, companionship, and trust. Families and service providers can help enhance friendship opportunities by introducing them to similar people to them, and not for a relationship…

Some people try to escape their work life and others attempt to escape their family and friends for deep rooted reasons. Isolation is not good for a person’s health and contrary to popular belief it could do more harm than help, “People who feel isolated and lonely and excluded tend to have poor physical health…
