Mayukwayukwa refugee settlement is located in the Kaoma District of Zambia’s Western Province and houses 11,000 refugees. The camp has major issue on the management of waste since there is no department for it. Furthermore, the camp has no designed place to dispose the waste which leads the inhabitants to dump solid waste into the nearby bushes (Bodonyi 2014). The project is intended to help the management of waste by sorting out types of waste and reducing the pollution causes by it.

It is estimated that one third of the refugee camps are having inadequate waste disposal and latrine facilities. It is crucial that preventing the spread of diseases is made from proper disposal of human waste. Besides that, numbers of standing tanks are usually potential breeding grounds for harmful animals like maggots and flies. Other than that, human waste produced methane gas is very explosive and an asphyxiation hazard. Furthermore, there are 5 schools in Mayukwayukwa, which are 2 community schools, 2 government-run primary schools and one recently opened government constructed secondary high school. When the secondary high school is fully operational, it is planned to accommodate 600 of students, refugees, former refugees and Zambians (Shimoh 2015). In Mayukwayukwa, there is a power supply infrastructure located at the nearby river rapids. With the help of UNHCR, the government had rehabilitated the power supply in order to generate electric power.
