In the beginning of the chapter, Mazower list Nazi propaganda from the Nazi handbook on what Germans should look for a spouse. Nazis wanted its citizens to marry only to those who share the same background, are in good health, and were able to produce children. On the other hand, Europeans were making anti-abortion laws and was not allowing women excuses to birth control. Thus, leaving women to be stuck with a child they do not want.
As mention before, people with disabilities truly were affect by laws to permit them to reproduce. The British felt the best way to control mentally ill from having children were to put them in asylums. The Nazis followed, but the big difference was Nazis gassed those in asylums. In addition, Asylums were expensive solution, therefore European countries started to sterilize those who were deemed as unfit citizens, because it was a cheaper alternative. It was the government way to make sure those who were unfit does not make inferior children and hopes to decrease their population.
