Company History
Dick and Mac Macdonald opened their establishment in 1940 in San Bernardino, California. They were originally a barbecue restaurant. In 1948 the incorporated McDonalds and opened up as a drive thru hamburger restaurant with nine menu items. In 1949, they took potato chips off the menu and added those now famous French fries. In 1955 the first modern looking McDonalds opened in Des Plaines, Illinois complete with the Golden Arches. In 1961, McDonalds University opened to train management and grow their business even greater. The restaurant made food changes an changed and evolved the menu. In 1971, the company introduced their character to include Ronald McDonald and Grimace and Hamburgler. In 1975 they introduced their breakfast line. The next big move was when they started their online website McDonalds.com in 1996. Over the years McDonalds started a national McDonalds all honor basketball team, created healthier sandwiches and breakfast items. They have been a symbol of American business success, growth, and tradition.
