Being a resident of the Dandenong Ranges, I have seen first-hand the hard work and dedication of the protesters to the fast food chain McDonalds. Every morning on my way to and from school I drive through the small town of Tecoma where local residents are fighting against the construction of a McDonalds. These people are out rain, hail or shine outside the building site of Tecoma McDonalds holding signs that have catch phrases such as “burger off” and other slogans mocking the fast food chain.
Tecoma is around 40km east of Melbourne’s CBD with a population of around 2,000 residents and up until 2011 was a very peaceful town on the lower slopes of the Dandenong ranges. In 2011 McDonalds lodged their planning application for one of their restaurants to be built in the suburb of Tecoma which sparked outrage amongst residents in Tecoma and surrounding suburbs. For the past 2 years the community has been working tirelessly to prevent the nightmare of yet another fast food chain being built in an area that quite clearly doesn’t want it there.
In a door-to door survey in which 1,085 adults answered the question “are you for or against a McDonalds in Tecoma” it was established that 94% of residents who were against it. Only 59 people said they were supportive of the fast food chain being in Tecoma.
On Friday the 17th of May of this year permits were approved for the demolition of Hazevale Dairy and Saffron Cottage, on August 8th these plans went forward and much loved historical buildings were destroyed just to be replaced with more golden arches. Childhood obesity is an ongoing issue that we are trying to prevent and our community has objectified. 9/10 residents in the hills have said no to McDonalds in Tecoma so why is it that the construction of the fast food chain is taking place?
