On March 31, the American Cancer Society honored
Hupke as “Survivor of the Year.” As a performer she sang a song at the event to express her emotions towards child cancer victims. “There was not a dry eye in the house,” said Lacey LaManna, who organized the event. Hupke’s medical history is jaw-dropping: 20 surgeries, 10 rounds of chemotherapy, 10 rounds of immunotherapy and 25 days of radiation. The only sign is a port in her chest. “I’ve said this before, and I really believe it: I never want to be a person everyone looks at and feels bad for,” she said. “No matter how sick I get, I want to be an activist and not sink into a cave and be depressed.”
In conclusion, it’s very beautiful how a young girl is very positive towards being in a hospital and surviving everyday. As a daughter who has grown up with a father who has leukemia, I understand the struggle of the point of view as her parents. You wake up everyday grateful that you still have the person you love everyday and make the most out of it. In my mother’s point of view, as a parent you have the struggle with financial aid and is worried about your child having the perfect life. Even though there is struggles, they are truly a blessing to have.
