'The large propulsor blade diameter cornpared to the small gas generator core provides engine bypass ratios of 35 or larger.
The achievcmcnt of this large bypass ratio is a fundamental element i n obtaining a substantial increase in fuel efficiency.
When compared to the majority of tlie aircraft i n current airline flccts, the UHB engine provides roughly a 50-percent rcdiiction i n fuel crinsumption wliilc mainlaining the same cruise speeds as today's turbofans?

ABSTRACT

'This paper summarizes the currcnt design status and technical developincnt of the McDonnell Douglas MD-90 transport aircraft family. Both ultrahigh-bypass (UHR) and advanced turbofan (V2500) engine installatioils are considered. Jlighlights of the UHB Technology Readincss Program are provided to identify thc broad technology base established for introduction of UHB engine technology. Technical aspects of the UHI3-powered configurations. designated MD-91192, are revicwed. Characteristics are identified which confirm that the design is an cfficicnt aircraft for the airline operator; a comfortable, safe, and reliable aircraft for the traveling public; and a good neighbor in terms of noise and emissions for the general public.
