“Morality…has nothing to do with obedience to God or gaining credit in heaven. Rather, the point is just to make life in this world as comfortable and as happy as possible” (Rachels 161). I do believe in obeying God, but obeying Him out of willingness merely because we love Him. However, my issue resides with the selfish tone of this belief. As previously stated, this world is “me-centric” where everything revolves around oneself. We can never be perfect, but we can strive to be. Imagine a world surrounded by individuals continuously pursuing goodness. Not just for the sake of themselves, but also for others, and primarily God. Pursuing a life of goodness only for the purpose of oneself alone is not enough and never will be. Living for yourself and/or for others alone will always fail you because the happiness is only temporary and also empty. Living for God is the opposite. Once you live for Him you learn the reason we should be good is to honor and please Him because we love Him. You realize we are to represent Christ through our lives and goodness does just that.
