Terms in Reference to Abortion
To understand the full meaning of abortion, it is important to first understand the meaning of the words conception, embryo, and life. Conception occurs when a male sperm cell from a fertile man goes through the vagina of a woman into the uterus and joins with the woman’s egg cell as it travels down one of the fallopian tubes from the ovary to the uterus. Once the fertilized egg continues to move down the fallopian tube, it begins to divide into two cells, then four cells, then more cells as the division continues (Diseases and Conditions). After the sperm has fertilized the egg, the fertilized the egg has traveled to the uterus and has become a growing cluster of about 100 cells, which is called a blastocyst (Diseases and Conditions). As the cells continue to divide, hormones are released that signal the body that a baby is growing inside the uterus. These hormones also signal the uterus to maintain its lining rather than shedding it. This means that a woman does not have a menstrual cycle that month, which is one of the first symptoms that a woman can tell she is pregnant. …show more content…
In humans, it is called an embryo until about eight weeks after fertilization occurs, and then it is considered a fetus (Embryo). The development of the embryo is called embryogenesis. It always starts with the fertilization of the egg by the sperm. The fertilized egg is then referred to as a zygote (Embryogenesis). The zygote will go through mitotic divisions with no significant growth and cellular differentiation, which will lead to the development of the embryo
