Many definitions of the meaning of life are centered on the positive ultimate value that individuals exhibit. This means that many of these definitions are pegged on the substance of the individual rather than the individual self. On the other hand, it is a reality that it is the character of man that defines who he is because the biological man alone cannot have a character description.
In his book, Frank looks at life deriving meaning from “love, courage despite difficulty and having purposeful work.” It is from this point that he argues that in order to have a purposeful life, an individual has to experience suffering. This is based on his suffering in the Nazi camp, Auschwitz, where he experienced high levels of brutality fro the Nazis and hunger in the camp.
