The Clash of Civilizations?
I. Huntington’s View of our Post-Cold War World * Predicts that the post-war era will be fundamentally different and threatening. (In-between realism and identity) * Upcoming clash of civilizations * Civilization as defined by Huntington: “A civilization is the highest cultural grouping of people at the broadest level of cultural identity that people have short of that which distinguishes humans from other species. It is defined both by common objective elements such as language, history, religion, customs, institutions, and by the subjective self-identification of people.” (1993) * ex. A citizen of Rome may see himself as a Roman, as an Italian, as a Catholic, as a Christian. He may see himself as a European, he may see himself as a Westerner. II. The Civilizations… (9 by Huntington)
Western (North America, Western Europe), Confucian (China), Japanese, Islamic (North Africa, middle east), Hindu (India), Slavic Orthodox (Russia, Eastern Europe), Latin American, African (sub-Sahara), Buddhist (Central Asia, Mongolia, SE Asia) –-Turkey, Western European or Middle East?

Conflict Becomes Civilizational * Predicts huge ideological wars * “From Princes, to Peoples, to Ideologies, to Civilizations” * Evolution of conflict: wars shift from being fought over nobility, to wars of nationalism (ex. Franco-Prussian, WWI) fought by citizen armies, then wars of ideology (rise of fascism and communism), next will be clash of cilivizations * Disagrees with Fukuyama that wars will end, liberal-democracy won out only in the west. * Many regions of the world reject democracy as foreign.
