Media and Its Effects on Criminal Activity
The Psychological Effect of Popular Media on the Increase of Crime

Over time, it has been observed that people have a tendency to learn from the world around them and from the people they interact. The phenomenon of learning within a social context by observation can be termed as social learning. Most individuals tend to observe and replicate the behavior of things with which they come in frequent contact and this is more likely to occur if their feel an emotional attachment with the object they are emulate. Children copy their seniors when they feel a certain amount of respect and admiration for them, and likewise, people emulate figures in popular media because they feel a psychological connection and they elevate these figures to a status of power within their lives. When people choose, consciously or subconsciously to imitate characters that display violent or criminal tendencies, the likelihood that crime levels will increase.
Hollywood and other popular movies are a likely candidate for the increase in crime. Copycat killers are common and cause untold damage in their desperate attempts to recreate the psychology of their favorite killers. Movies like Natural Born Killers and The Clockwork Orange have long been inspiring people who are naturally susceptible to social influences. What has not been considered as completely as it should have been is the effect of psychologically disturbing books. Books such as Fight Club or Choke are equally effective in the conveyance of their messages but have not been recognized for the damaging effect it could have on an individual’s psyche.
Social Learning also plays a key role in the increase of criminal behavior, as it is only through observation that the media can work its way into a person’s behavioral patterns. There are many concepts regarding learning but Bandura’s theory and experiments in the effect of role models is the most pertinent in the situation.     One social psychological theory of aggression is Bandura’s social learning theory, in which he combines both social and cognitive psychology in his social cognitive perspective of human behaviour. Bandura believed that behaviour was not only motivated by psychological factors but also by more socio-environmental factors. He argued that the individual and the environment were linked, something which he called reciprocal determinism. Bandura believed that the presence of a role model from whom behaviour could be imitated was the key part of the social learning theory, and that this role model would either be similar to the person imitating the behaviour (e.g. same age or gender) or is in a position of power (e.g. celebrities or parents).     Bandura’s Social Learning Theory suggests that acts of aggression are learnt through the observation of role models. His original “Bobo Doll” study showed that when exposed to aggressive behaviour small children copied this behaviour, not just by being physically aggressive but even copying the verbally aggressive behaviour. However this study focuses on children who are supposed to learn in this manner, this doesn’t demonstrate that this would also be true in older children or adults who already have a set moral compass that would interfere with copying aggressive behaviours. However Bandura’s later study showed that if children saw someone get punished for aggressive behaviour they were less likely to be aggressive themselves when they were allowed to play with the bobo doll but if they saw someone get rewarded for this aggressive behaviour then they were much more likely to act aggressively themselves, this shows that vicarious reinforcement is important to the learning of aggression through the social learning theory, as receiving direct positive reinforcement leads to people having high self efficacy making them very likely to repeat the aggressive behaviour that they were rewarded for. In terms of aggression this reward could come in many forms such as acceptance from a violent gang they want to be a part of or just attention from a parent or teacher. Moreover, Walter and Thomas' study in 1963 further supported this theory as the results of the study demonstrated that aggressive behaviour was a result of imitation of role models. However, the social learning theory does not explain what triggers aggression. Additionally, the study emphasises nurture and learning through observation - ignoring nature and biological explanations.…

    Due to this fact, the connection between violence and aggression is self-evident, and the continual stream of violence through these forms of media do not help the matter in any regard. This is supported by Nancy C. Cornwell’s statement that “research supports a correlation between media violence and aggression.” Media can send many messages to those who are exposed to it, but this statement suggests that a less than savory ideal may be sent to younger audiences who happen to be exposed to it.     This study was made to investigate if social behaviors can be obtained from observation and imitation. In this study, he had 72 children broken up into three conditions, aggressive, non-aggressive, and no model. In the aggressive group, children watched a model attack a Bobo doll with both physical and verbal abuse and in the non-aggressive group, children watched a model play with toys and ignore the Bobo doll. Then the child is put into a room full of toys and allowed to play with them. Two minutes later, the child is told that they can no longer play with these toys. The child is then taken into another room with both aggressive and non-aggressive toys. The observers then watch the child and record any imitative aggression, non-imitative aggression and partial imitation. The results were that exposure to aggressive modeling increase aggressive behaviors and then lead to children assaulting the Bobo doll with gun or other toys that was never modeled for them before. This experiment then help Bandura develop his idea of the Social Learning Theory. This theory agrees with the learning theories of classical conditioning and operant conditioning but adds two important ideas that behavior is learned from one’s environment through observation and mediating process occur between stimuli and responses. The Social Learning Theory is seen as a bridge between traditional learning theory and cognitive approach. Unlike Skinner, Bandura believe that humans do not observe a behavior and automatically imitate it, there is some thought beforehand and this is called mediational processes.
