The Role of Mass Media in Creating Stereotype
According to writer Stanly Cohen, “Stereotyping has been around for as long as mass media has been around.” Media considered one of the most important reasons why stereotype is existing in our communities. In the documentary, “The Bronze Screen,” explains how Latino are facing problem in Hollywood in the way films present and show them in a bad way. Because of these types of films, audience or people start to stereotype Latino and deal with them as a bad group. Also William Helmerich in his article, “Stereotype truth,” claims how historical experiences have the impact in forming group qualities. He mention examples about Jewish and how they were known as better business man than others , when he make a research he found that Jewish have been in business for centuries, but also we cannot generalize and say that all Jewish are a good business man . Here the media even in mentioning positive stereotypes play a role in giving a credit to certain group forgetting that there are other groups good in this field too . Stereotype continues to be used in media, despite how far the world become.
First research has indicated that stereotypes have a historical root. William Helmreich in his article, “Stereotype Truth,” says, “Such stereotypes usually stem from the historical experience of the group itself and the experience of those with whom the group has had contact. “Here Helmreich illustrating that historical event and contacting with other people have a great impact in creating the group character. For example, Helmreich claims that Hispanic are known for their apt to be wormer and more emotional, and this go back for the way they being raised. The anthropologist Oscar Lewis in Helmerich article says, “Hispanic families he studied had warm emotional ties , especially between mother and child.” In these two quotes readers will notice that Hispanic get these character
