Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. It is important to have media literacy in times of war due to media bias. After watching three films on ISIS, it is clear to see that the media promotes fear, anger, and hatred toward ISIS.
First, it is important to see that the media’s bias gives the American citizens fear of ISIS. There is one film that is just dedicated to showing the training of children for ISIS. It shows some of the things that they learned such as the name of different guns and how to shoot them. It also explains how children are starting to become very loyal to ISIS. The US has recently had a gay rights movement and it is probably the largest movement in the US of this decade. Furthermore, in the film Escaping ISIS they show many people died trying to flee or evade ISIS clutches. Randomly, they had gave this description of a man who died trying to escape ISIS and just threw in that he was gay. The videos had only explained what was different between the Americans and ISIS and nothing that they had in common.
Lastly, the media creates hatred towards ISIS by providing bias views. When the films had shown videos of ISIS, it only was of them talking of killing or torturing. For example, in the film ISIS in Afghanistan they showed a woman about to get executed from an ISIS supporter for committing adultery on her husband. Also, many of the interviews in the films that took place were only of victims or people in groups that opposed ISIS. They never really interviewed anyone who belonged in ISIS.
Again, the media uses its bias views and is censored to promote fear, anger, and hatred towards ISIS. This doesn’t just appear against ISIS. Media bias can be found in any kind of topic, politics especially. This is why media literacy is important to have, so it is possible to see through the bias point of view, and have an understanding on what is actually
