Not only do media impact the perception of others, but it can generally impact self-perceptions as well. Individuals could also allow television to influence the way that they at, or influence their role in society. It is very important for the viewers to understand that everything that’s being portrayed on television should not be taken seriously. Because television continues to promote these representations, viewers would perceive that these representations are the actual personalities of all African Americans. According to Ford (1997), individuals who are exposed to these stereotypes on television are more incline to make negative remarks about African Americans.
Statement of the Problem This particular study focuses on the television portrayal of African Americans. This paper will mainly focus on the stereotypes, negative and positive, of African Americans. It will also focus on the effect it has on African Americans and the individuals who are exposed to these portrayals. This study will mainly examine the portrayal of African Americans, and some of the different shows that contribute to these portrayals. It will be used to determine whether television plays a role in the way society view African Americans.

Previous studies have mainly focused on how African Americans are represented. Many studies have not focused on the way it affects the individuals that are viewing these portrayals (Dubriel, 2006).
