In scripted shows and film, it displays African Americans as being violent, and less reconciled. It seems that more viewers engage in watching physical altercations. "Overall, media outlets created a narrative that portrayed African Americans as lazy, violent individuals who were prone to crime." (Jr) The issue with this stereotype is that crime should not be categorized by particular individuals because crime can occur in good neighborhoods, but also crime can be caused by anyone, not just African Americans. In television shows and films, the media displays the majority of African American characters of encountering poverty, which is accurate in today's society. In today's society, African Americans encounter struggle on a daily basis, due to the reason of the jobs in the industry, but a majority of the films do not display the actuality. It was found among the respondents that those who watched more television news were more likely to conclude an African American's lack of socioeconomic status as a result of lack of motivation and not from the lack of job opportunities. (Kulaszewicz) Recent studies have discovered that the common stereotypes within the media that targeted African Americans actually is inaccurate. For example, the stereotype that African Americans are the poorest in the society has proven to be inaccurate. Black families represent 59 percent of the poor portrayed in the media, according to the analysis, but account for just 27 percent of Americans in poverty. Whites families make up 17 percent of the poor depicted in news media, but make up 66 percent of the American poor, the study said.
