They begin to create the dream by manipulating their own bodies and creating what was created in the media. Children are susceptible to their environments and with the constant unrealistic ideals of woman throughout the years it has become an acceptable form of advertisement. “The representation of women in the media has always been exploitative. It has, throughout the years, reduced women to being nothing more than objects to be won, prizes to be shown off, and playthings to be abused.” (Berberick). That’s not to say we don’t need to teach our children the importance of self -esteem and learning to love on self for who they are. Eating healthy and exercising are necessary to live a healthy life but to a degree. With that being said I believe that it is imperative to hold advertising companies to some responsibility. In recent months there was the first model featured in a magazine that was not a size 2. Although this is a step forward their attempt at suggesting these are plus sized model may not be the most appropriate term used. These woman do not appear to be plus sized at all but according to Feb 5th, 2015 edition of Sports Illustrated magazine, who featured Robyn Lawley a supposed size 12 model, looks phenomenal, but not “plus size”, in her magazine photo shoot. We also take a major step back by making it a special event that a plus size model is in the front cover. There should be more important issues that we should be addressing. Reputations of eating disorders and unhealthy diets are linked to the industry.
