Medical Conditions In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Medical Conditions: Back then, America’s biggest concern wasn’t how their condition was or what treatment they’ll be needing, but was how they were going to pay for it. This is still a common problem today but isn’t as big of a problem as it was back then. Public hospitals were also understaffed due the Great Depression. This resulted in people leaving the hospital without any type of treatment. Some people wouldn’t even be able to make it to the hospitals, yet alone a doctor because of how far they were usually located and transportation was very limited back then. This situation occurs in the novel. In the novel, Lennie injures Curley and, he is in desperate need of a doctor. For them to get to a doctor, they would have to go into town. This isn’t a big issue for them as they have their own, easy way of transportation which they were fortunate to have. Since they didn’t have any antibiotic, childhood immunizations, or high-tech procedures, people often died of diseases rarely seen today. Their life expectancy was low as well; an American women’s life expectancy was 62 years old and an American man’s life expectancy was 52 years old. Treatments in the past have been eliminated after extensive research proved that they didn’t work. Though progress has been made, there is still a lot our society needs to work on. There is still discrimination against mental illness occurring today. There are many people invalidating their mental illnesses, claiming that they’re either just “lazy” or “dumb. The modern-day media is also to blame for this. Violent perpetrators are occasionally portrayed as mentally ill, which causes the public to perceive other mentally ill people as “crazy” or “weird”. We may have gotten better in terms of treatment and social acceptability, but understanding mental illness is the next thing we need to work

The story takes place during the 1930s at a small ranch south of Soledad, California. The country was struggling through the Great Depression and focused on isolationism, preferring to settle troubles at home rather than the rising crisis in Europe. Though, the Eugenics Movement, a movement based on the idea of improving the human race through selective breeding – largely seen in Nazi Germany, was also beginning to spread in the United States. Stemming from the Eugenics Movement, public talk of euthanasia also dramatically increased. “Truth is everybody is going to hurt you: you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for” (Bob Marley). The novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, was set in the Great depression. In the novel George has to deal with Lenny every single day and it’s not easy, but he loves him and he just has to accept that Lenny is part of his life. In this book, society was frustrating. People were very sexist, and instead of coming together and helping each other everyone kept to themselves this is also known as isolation. Also, during this time people who suffered from mental and physical disabilities were often isolated and faced discrimination. Death is a horrendous thing that can cause an irreplaceable hole in somebody’s life. Death can also represent chaos and the pain of another character in the story. In Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, the deaths of Johnny, Dally, and Bob created an intriguing plot and unveiled the hidden feelings and personalities of characters who react to the deaths, like Dally and Randy. The major deaths in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, which are the deaths of Candy’s Dog, Curley’s Wife, and Lennie, displayed the personalities of the characters who killed them and developed the story in the book. The theme of death reveals hidden elements of characters who strongly felt a certain way about the character. Even though death is the end of a character, it…

In of mice and men, characters are cruel when they have power to control others of lower status. Many characters display a disregard for ones feeling or emotions through physical and verbal actions. On the ranch, hierarchy is extremely prominent and cruelty is a side effect of it. The characters that are lower of status are not cruel to those above. The character Curley’s wife, is an impeccable example of this. Even though she is of lower status on the ranch, she still has power over those below her. Crooks is one of those character, he is a coloured man and she uses this against him. During section 4, crooks is discusses plans with Lennie and candy, he forgets his circumstances in the ‘white man’s world’. He tells Curley’s wife that she has…

How do you think society handle people who are different? I was treated differently when I moved to Connecticut. Everyone talked about me and did not like me because I was born in Texas. Everyone called me dumb because I did not have the same education as everyone else. People use to say “You’ll never be as smart as me because you were born in a dumb state.” They use to make fun of my accent, they would taunt me and say “Howdy y’all!” and act like a cowboy.…

Has anyone ever ever wondered what life was like in the Great Depression? The 1930’s wasn’t a great time to live in for people of color, women, or the mentally ill. People of color feared a beating all the time. They probably also had a book with all of their rights, like Crooks did in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. If women of the time got married, they were pretty much owned by their husband. The mentally ill most likely got put into a mental institute. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, life wasn’t great. The mentally ill, people of color, and women of the time were discriminated against.…

There is a very thin line drawn in the debate whether or not death to another person is ever justifiable. There are so many different cases where I have a double sided opinion. I ultimately think that reasons for death such as euthanasia, abortion, acting in self-defense, etc. really depend on the circumstances of the situation. Webster’s dictionary defined murder as "the unlawful killing of another human being, especially with premeditated malice." What exactly is justifiable killing? Is abortion Okay? What about euthanasia, self-defense, war, or capital punishment? No I am not a believer in war, abortion nor do I think that taking another’s life is the absolute best decision. However if someone is putting your life or your loved ones life at harm, is that a reasonable clause, to use self-defense to protect your own life? I do believe it can be justified, but not always justifiable.…

After the war and during the early 1930’s there were four leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, pneumonia, and infectious and parasitic diseases including influenza and syphilis. One every twenty Americans were too sick for work or school usually taking approximately ten days for a full recovery, however, people began taking vitamins, insulin, and other nutrients which helped create a longer lifespan for the average American. Even with these factors to consider, the biggest issue was a method of payment for medical treatment. Forty percent of Americans relied on relief and many doctors never saw payment. Hospitals felt financial troubles as unpaid bills doubled and donations fell.…

The understanding of mental illness today since the early 1900s has changed significantly. In the 1900s, people still had no real understanding of what caused mental illnesses, let alone how to treat the disease. The disease was feared and was seen as incurable. Mentally ill patients would be sent to asylums, and as a form of treatment they were tortured. Until in the later 1900s, it was discovered that certain factors and drug therapy could be a treatment to cure the mentally ill. Today there are various forms of treatment and treatment settings for the different mental illnesses that help to benefit the patients’ condition.…
