Imagine having an illness that couldn’t be cured. All the drugs administered never eased the symptoms, all except for one marijuana. This was the case for an eight year old boy named Sam diagnosed with Autism. Medical marijuana has many benefits and should be legalized in NC. The earliest accounts of marijuana being used for medicinal purposes dates back to the third millennium in China where is was used to treat rheumatic pain. Recent studies have shown that pain and suffering has been managed through the drug but controversy still remains that the drug has no medicinal purpose and could have addictive tendencies that could lead to harder drug use.
Medical marijuana should be legal in NC because it has great medical value, can be used to boost state revenue and could decriminalize the drugs for patients who seek its medicinal purpose. Through vigorous evaluation and study marijuana has been proven to treat the symptoms of AIDS/HIV, Alzheimer’s disease, Arthritis, Asthma/breathing disorders, Glaucoma, Epilepsy, Migraines, nausea due to Chemotherapy, Tourette syndrome and Psychological conditions.
There are numerous positive effects that medicinal marijuana has on all of the illnesses that are listed. For example marijuana primary benefit for patients being treated with glaucoma, is its effect on Intraocular pressure (IOP). In one study eighty percent of patients who smoked marijuana experienced a significant reduction in IOP of sixteen to forty-five percent. Elvy Musikka a patient in the Federal Compassionate IND program for Medical Marijuana stated: “I was diagnosed with Glaucoma in 1975. Within in a year, I already knew there was absolutely nothing that was on the market that worked for my Glaucoma except for marijuana.” Musikka also said that another benefit from the drug was that it has no harmful side effects as opposed to other medications prescribed.
