They had many jobs that they had to do in the monasteries. There were many rules that a Monk would have to follow. Monks did many thing on a daily basis in the monastery. Every day they prayed, practiced silence, did work like cooking, cleaning and writing (Hackett). One of the things that monks would do is work for the good of the monastery. They would do the jobs that I included above (Hackett). Another job they had was to farm. Monks could sell their surplus to earn money but they weren’t allowed to eat the food without their master's consent. (GECOSAF). Monks were religious as well. Everyday they would have time to pray. This was known as the common prayer(Hackett). Before 1098 monks had to pray four times a day(GECOSAF). Monks were expected to be spiritual leaders (Hackett). There were many rules to follow for a monk One of the rules was monks could not leave the abbey alone (GECOSAF). If a monk did leave the abbey then he would have to leave with another monk(GECOSAF). Monks were not allowed to speak about what they saw outside of the monastery (Hackett) A third rule was that monks would have to go to bed early because they got up when it was still dark .If any of these rules were broken the punishment was long periods of prayer and whipping.
