Peasant Life In Medieval Times
In the Middle Ages peasants life was hard and cruel. Serfs didn’t have many opportunities in life because of the impact religion had on society at this time. The Catholic Church had extreme power over peasants life, influenced their culture, and kept them at the bottom of society. Serfs went through multiple events that kept them low in society.
At this time there was a type of government called feudalism taking place. Feudalism has three different organizations; the social, political, and economical organizations. The social organization separated each class from kings down to serfs. The kings were the high and mighty ones while the knights, cardinals, …show more content…
A Lot of things that they would produce was bought and sold to other manors that surrounded them. Since they were the bottom on society they couldn’t afford books in able for them to learn like the upper classes were able to so they were less educated.
At this time serfs weren’t taken seriously, the church had major power over the community. Churches became large landowners in Europe and required everyone to pay a 10% tithe of their income to the church. Serfs already didn’t get paid much so after they paid the tithes they barely had any money left for themselves. Since there was a large amount of people working as peasants this is how the churches gained most of their money. In some situations, if needed some tithes were even paid in the goods that they would produce on the manor (C.N. Trueman). Plenty of serfs would barter trade the goods they would have to make a living. They would trade between parties without using money. It enabled those who were lacking currency to obtain good and services using money.
