The McKenzie-Condon Chicagoans was created in 1922. The team member, Jim Lanigan, Jimmy McPartland, Dick McPartland, Bud Freeman and Frank Teschemacher, were all the students from Austin High School. They always got together at a place named the Spoon and Straw to listen to their favorite jazz. One afternoon, they heard a new batch of music played by The New Orleans Rhythm Kings. They felt excited and played this kind of music five hours at the Spoon and Straw. They formed their band and named it “The Blue Friars” to salute the band of The New Orleans Rhythm Kings. Jimmy McPartland played the cornet, Dick McPartland played the banjo, Bud Freeman played C-Melody saxphone, Frank Teschemacher played a clarinet and Jim Lannigan played the sousaphone.…
Fried Green Tomatoes is the story of the town of Whistle Stop, Alabama. Most of the story centers on Ruth Jamison and Idgie Threadgoode, a pair of women who changed the lives of everyone in their town. The story is told both in the present, 1920s-40s, when the events occurred, and in the past, while Ninny Threadgoode relives those events by retelling them to her friend, Evelyn Crouch, in the 1980’s.…
An individual’s response to the drastic changes in their life reveals a lot about their character. In Steven Galloway’s novel, The Cellist of Sarajevo, the author follows the lives of three distinct characters affected by the siege on their beloved city. In the face of such compelling and often violent circumstances, each character learns to adapt their behaviour and attitude to fit their stark surroundings. During such dark times, individuals find their survival challenged by showing acts of kindness and mercy. Much like Sarajevo itself, Arrow, Dragan and Kenan experience the deterioration of their principles and spirit. In order to survive, they sometimes have to make powerful sacrifices in war-torn Sarajevo that they would never have considered…

I wanna be contigo, and live contigo, and dance contigo, para have contigo, una noche loca”. This is the chorus to Enrique Iglesias’ billboard hit, Bailando. If you listen to the song you can hear the rhythm of reggae, hip hop, Spanish flamenco, reggaeton among a cacophony of other sound. I hear beauty, see color and feel joy when I listen to this song. The success of this song according to Gary Trust, associate director of charts is due to “the fact that a quarter of this country’s youths are Latino. He comments that the market is so diverse that Latino artists don’t have to pick just one language or two.…
Mademoiselle Reisz inquired Edna how has she been using her time and is shocked to hear of Edna’s choice of becoming an artist. She warns her that an artist must be brave, possessing “a courageous soul that dares and defies.” Edna assures her that she has persistence if nothing else, and Mademoiselle Reisz laughs, hands over the letter to Edna, and begins to play the Chopin Impromptu that Edna asked to hear. The music deeply affects Edna, and she weeps as the pianist glides between the Impromptu and another piece, “Isolde’s song.” When Edna asks if she may visit again, Mademoiselle Reisz replies that she is welcome at all times.…

In 1979, The Knack performed one of their hit singles “My Sharona” in front of a packed house. This song represented the alternative/pop rock genre, and was considered a major hit in the late 1970s. As a child, I remember hearing the song on the radio and I enjoyed the catchy and memorable tune. Although I did not quite understand the lyrics at the time, my dad listened to it often when he worked in the garage. This essay will first describe a variety of important musical characteristics that are displayed within the performance. Next, it will discuss how this song was a launchpad for a future song that became just as popular a few years later. Lastly, before providing my own personal critique, I will discuss how the song assisted The Knack with getting back together nearly 20…
The intro is monophonic, played by the balafons, but changes into heterophonic as soon as the drums step in.…
Senior year is like listening to a broken radio that repeats the same phrase over and over again. As an incoming freshman in college, we are still unable to throw this broken radio out. We've been forced to listen to the phrase "How are you going be successful in college?" I believe that everyone has a different definition of being successful in college. For me, being successful in college is keeping up with my grades and living my life to the fullest.…
Deir el-Medina is not an important site to study when looking at Egyptian culture, architecture and workforce as it only represents a small part of Egyptian society and a specialised one at that. Deir el-Medina was a city that was built for the sole purpose of building tombs for the people of the main Egyptian cities. For this reason it is an important site to study when looking at Egyptian burial practices. It is, however useful when looking at Egyptian culture, architecture and workforce as Deir el-Medina did have a certain degree of contact with the rest of Egypt, namely Thebes.…
In other terms, this music is as old as the 5th and 7th century AD, giving it well over many thousand years. As you may hear in the link I have provided below on “Arabic Worship Songs”, you may hear the influence that vocals have on middle eastern music. It is predominantly used for worship purposes dating back to biblical days. You can also get the sense that this music is used as a form of prayer to a higher power in the Islamic culture. It is a very beautiful form of worship and I respect it immensely. In a second link below involving Middle Eastern Music, I have evaluated it in an entirely different manner. I wanted to pick a video that was completely different from what was considered the norm, but just as socially acceptable. As belly dancing is very prominent in certain middle eastern countries, I incorporated this video to give a taste of what instruments are popular around this area. As I mentioned above, they typically played woodwinds, percussions, and strings. If you listen to the background music you can hear the cymbals rattling together along with the use of some sort of woodwind. This makes it easy to tell the origination of the music…
In the number 2 position on the list was That’s what I like by Bruo Mars. The reason that I think so many people like this song is based on a few things. First off we are talking about Pop music, I am not saying that there is anything bad or good about that, but what I am saying is it is simple music that appeals to the majority of the population. For example, in the book the subject of those around you (friends and family) comes up. If the majority of the people around you listen to this music more than likely you will also find yourself in the same boat. Another aspect that could be pointed out would be road markers. I personally took this portion of the book two different ways. The first of the two ways being the parts of the song and how…
In The Song of Songs, the Shulamite and her lover are everything but what society conforms to. In their Hebrew society there are rules and restrictions pertaining to sexual relations and who is allowed to marry who. These rules are stated in the book of Deuteronomy, and if the citizens do not abide by the laws written in the book, the punishments were harsh and brutal. However, the Shulamite and her lover seemed to be living in their own world where they could not care less about what society thought of them. In this poem, The Shulamite and her lover break many laws, and in most cases, desire seems to be considered a higher law to them than anything written in Deuteronomy.…
Lieder ohne Worte (Song without Words) is written by the Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It is a collection of forty-eight short lyrical piano pieces of markedly song-like character that he wrote at various periods of his life between 1809 and 1847. They are well suited to the study of musical form because of their artistic value. Op. 19b, No. 1 Andante con moto in E major was written in 1830 and is the first in the collection. The piece is in the key of E major and modulates from E to B to G major.…
