Meditech
“I wanted to create a company ever since I was in college. When my frat brothers went on to high paying jobs in private industry, I went to work in the computer science lab at Mass General Hospital. The position was funded by the National Institute of Health making anything I developed public domain. Curt and I developed MUMPS and used it to launch Meditech.” This was a quote from A. Neil Pappalardo who was one of the founders of Meditech. Neil Pappalardo, Morton E. Ruderman, Curtis W. Marble, Jerome H. Gorssman, and Dr. Edward B. Roberts founded Meditech and in July of 1969, EG&G invested five hundred thousand dollars in the company. The full time staff included Ruderman as president and Pappalardo and Marble as everything else. On August 4, 1969, Meditech was opened for business and Larry Polimeno was hired as the first employee. Also in 1969 the writing started for MIIS ( Meditech Interpretive Information System) and this becomes the first template for MUMPS standard in the ANSI format. From 1971 to 1979, various systems were developed such as auto parts distribution systems, hotel chain reservation systems, and Hong Kong Telephone Company Inquiry system as well as systems for an international oil company and a cola company. In 1973 a Patient Medical History Module was developed. Doctors wanted a “problem oriented” system for their outpatient dispensary that serviced naval personnel and their dependents. The result of this was the first on-line, medical record system
