Dominantly, four out of seven participants consume chips once a month at home with the complementary consumption of pop or soft drinks. The group is also female and Asian dominant, at the age range of 19-23, most of whom would buy the chips for themselves. The participants were given chips to consume at the beginning of the experiment, resulting an average of general enjoyment of chips (before any other conditions) at the scale of 8 out of 10. After choosing their favorite brand of the chips, the average of enjoyment increases to 9. Yet, their likelihood to purchase in a month is only at 5/10. This reveals that the enjoyment of eating the chips does not necessarily translate to the purchase behavior. This can be a result of the barriers between the consumption and purchase decision including locations, price and health concerns. In terms of whether the organic version makes a difference on consumers’ perceived experience, the results show conflicting data where two participants rated as low as 0 for the enjoyment while one participant gave a 10. The average of enjoyment for organic chips is 6, which explicitly shows that the enjoyment decreases significantly when the concept of organic chips is introduced. Many participants made important comments that the word “organic” does not justify the unhealthy nature of the chips; rather it strays away from the consumers’ basic understanding and expectation of the chips. When examining the flavor effect, BBQ is the dominant favorite flavour. The level of enjoyment and likelihood to buy for flavour choice are consistent with the brand choice, averaging at 9 and 5 accordingly. With the two treatment groups that have additional sensory…

The author mentioned that favorite flavors from childhood can affect an adult's choice of food. He also shows that spice trading played an important role in the development and expansion of humans in history. With such an influence, the flavor industry has grown since its beginning in mid-nineteenth century with approximately ten thousand new products introduced yearly.…

For example, sweet foods are usually associated with carbohydrates that are a great source of energy. Sour food allows us to identify food that has gone off and would therefore contain harmful bacteria. Salt food is vital for the function of our cells. Bitter tastes are associated with plant chemicals that could be linked with poison, again a hazard for our health. Finally, umami allows us to identify meaty and savoury qualities in food that indicate a source of protein.…

However, Pollan says our brains are confusing the food we eat. The brain thinks of bitter foods as toxic and sweet foods as healthy, high energy foods. For example, he explains that “. . . some of the bitterest plants contain valuable nutrients, even useful medicines. We can’t rely on our sense of taste when we choose what we eat” (106). This argument shows that Pollan believes that the brain, while communicating with taste, misleads people into eating food that is not healthy. As taste largely impacts what humans eat, we should be aware of this fact, ignoring our senses and relying instead on…

In order to better understand how food reveals these different truths about our food preferences, Allen says, “it is good to consider that you are the product of multiple food histories” (Harvard Press, 2012). These histories help us to consciously and unconsciously shape our food preferences. Our own personal experiences as we grow and develop in our lives cultural environment, biological history, and evolutionary history all play a huge part in this mental process. Our family and the culture that we grow up in helps to shape what is acceptable and not acceptable food choices.…

What, When and How to Eat

Yes, I believe my personal experiences support these concepts discussed in 12.3 of the reading material. The Learned Taste Preference and Aversion section describes that nutrition has little direct effect on our feelings of hunger. Many of us prefer to eat food that are culturally specific to us. This is something I agree with. For example I am half Mexican I enjoy spicy foods but my boyfriend and his children are not use to this type of food, while I think it’s good they do not like the taste because they have had different foods based on their culture. This does influence what we eat. Now on to when we eat, I do believe when we eat has to do with “cultural norms, work schedules, family routines, personal preferences, wealth, and a variety of other factors.” ( Biopsychology, John P.J. Pinel) The chapter also states on how we have certain feelings or attacks of malaise, as the reading calls it, when we miss a regularly scheduled meal. This happens to me, I feel nausea. Last factors that influence how much we eat. The reading material states that when we stop eating a meal before the food is gone is called satiety. “Satiety mechanism plays a major role in determining how much we eat.” (Biopsychology, John P.J.Pinel)This section also states that the way we feel about food and our personal experiences with food also influences how much we eat (not just our physical need for food but our physiological need for food affects how much we eat.) Also our social settings has an effect on how much we eat. I know this to be true because I am about 20lbs overweight and in social setting I eat less. I do not want others to think I eat too much. This…

Although I believe that my (Mexican) culture has one of the best tasting foods that make your mouth water by just the sight of the dish. Each dish has a special, spicy taste that makes your mouth hotter than 120 Fahrenheit, but you still eat it for the reason of it's tasting so marvelous. In my house, my generous mom makes home cook meals that smell like heaven, although we're a tiny family of 4, including my 2 cousins she's always making enough food to feed a whole school. If I'm not eating Mexican food I'm eating American food which is normally greasy fast food, that taste good as well but not the best.…
