In 1852, the leading citizens of Rochester asked Douglass to give a speech as part of their Fourth of July celebrations. Douglass accepted their invitation.…
In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban we were introduced to Sirius Black, a character who would change the Harry Potter world, as all readers would know it.…
It stands for the families who have people over seas and people who died for the freedom of our country and what we take for granted everyday. Veterans lay their lives down for the flag. Then people just turn around and do an act that hurts the soldiers. I bet if they were in the line of fire as a soldier. They would have completely different thoughts about the flag and what it stands for.…
Memorial Day was first celebrated in the years following the Civil War and was officially labelled a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May, and it is celebrated to honor our veterans and remember past wars and the brave men and women that serve in the military today. Many people, young and old, visit cemeteries or memorials to honor a lost family member, or a friend. On memorial day, everyone is affected, even if they don’t know a veteran. This memorial day I joined my Boy Scout troop in setting flags on the graves of fallen soldiers and veterans who have passed away. We were honoring our community and the veteran’s service. But we could not honor those who fell many years ago in the Civil War.…
America is a country full of patriotic, free spirited, opinionated, and passionate citizens. The United States of America has many symbols that portray the true nature of the country. Some of these symbols include, the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and the Liberty Bell, but no national monument can compare to “Ol’ Glory” herself, the American Flag. Everyone that looks at this flag sees red, white, blue, and the stars and stripes, but many Americans look past its physical appearance and feel passionate about what it all represents; those Americans see patriotism, devoted love and support for their country.…

It’s not that easy being green. It’s not that easy being a frog, either. Some would say that he is the most awesome amphibian of all time. Others would proclaim him a puppet above the rest. His name and footprints are on a star at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, a rare honor given only to the best in Hollywood. It’s an even greater leap for an amphibian. You guessed it. I am here today to honor Kermit the Frog, a well-mannered, always positive, funny, frog who left the life of a quiet, peaceful swamp in the bayou to take on the world with his green philosophy. To some Kermit is an icon of hope for a greener, cleaner world, and to others he is an inspiration towards acceptance and kindness to his fellow creatures on Earth. To ALL who have ever heard Kermit speak or sing, he is the voice of wisdom and encouragement when they just need a smile.…
I am 14 years old and in 8th grade, at McCord Junior High. My English class is writing letters to thank veterans in honor of Veteran’s Day. With that being said, I would like to thank you for the great things you did, such as putting yourself in danger, for our country. Thank you for fighting in dangerous times to protect our country. I really appreciate, what you have done to help everyone in our country. You and many other vetrinas do many things to protect our country, thank you.…
Memorial Day is not a day to have fun and party, but a special time to remember those who showed such devotion to our country to…
To conclude, the flag means a whole lot more to me than our countries symbol, it means courage, and bravery. It puts us all together as friends and family. With our flag it means all of this and it is just one…
Today we are celebrating your Bar-Mitzvah, the time that they call the “acceptance of all the mitzvot.” As your older brother, I can tell you that its not the easiest part of growing up, but Dad would want me to say that you must always work your best to realize the importance of being a Jew and too love judaism. In celebrating your Bar Mitzvah this shabbos, and going on in life, you must always remember the core of who you are as a jew and what you represent. As I watch you grow and become a man, I think about who you are already. Your spirit and enthusiasm for life is something that was innate to you since you were born, and you must use that excitement for life forever. The most…
October 27, 2008 the day the city of Philadelphia finally could breathe a sigh of relief. On this date the Philadelphia Phillies won the 2008 World Series, breaking the city’s long 25 years of heart breaks since the city’s last major sport championship. They beat the Tampa Bay Rays in 5 Games in the best of 7 series. Four days later the city’s dreams of a parade down Broad Street finally became a reality. On October 31st, 2008 instead of costumes and Halloween candy the city was painted red. Everywhere you could see, everyone was celebrating the World Championship of our Philadelphia Phillies. The city took a day off. Whether it be from school, work, or even a day full of errands, the city shut down to be a part of this great memory. Hundreds of thousands poured into the heart of the Philadelphia. As the parade marched on down Broad Street, fans lined the street 40 to 50 rows of people deep. The sea of red shirts flooded Broad Street, but was then separated by the flatbed trucks that carried our beloved champions. The roar of the crowd chanting, “Let’s Go Phillies!” echoed throughout the entire city just like the Liberty Bell used too when it rang so many years ago. The parade ended in Citizens Bank Park with a sellout crowd. As they held up the trophy the place erupted in cheers.…
There was this one killer store in the 70’s called Screaming Mimis’ that I absolutely adored. It helped me through some hard financial times back when I used to sing at night and work retail during the day. It inspired my fashion that I wear today, and shopping there was one of my favorite…
We've gathered here today to commemorate, the egress of one class and ushering in of another to these hallowed halls of Grosse Pointe North High School via a graduation ceremony. However, it is more applicably a death, than a graduation. Please, lend me your ears, so as to stiffen the morbid conjecture that is immersing itself within your minds at this very moment. For you see, in the days of yore, when Norsemen still roamed this earth, they believed irrevocably in the notion of death as the ultimate triumph of an assailed human body and spirit; not as a catalyst of immense dread and anxiety. Yet, many of the individuals present on this field would indubitably remonstrate this ideology…
Over the years his real job has come with many different titles. For 50 years he has been a son and brother, for 31 he has been a loving father, for 26 he has been a dedicated husband, for 5 he has been a grandfather, and for 18 years and counting he has been and will always be my mentor. Today I would like to honor my father John Zachary Smith, and explain to you how and why he has become my mentor. Standing at exactly 6 feet tall, sporting dark black hair and tan skin, being loud, extremely talkative and radiating with energy, are just a few characteristics that can be attributed to his Italian heritage. When introducing himself to someone new, he reaches out his rough and calloused hand giving them a firm handshake and replies “My name’s John Smith, really honest”. My father has the ability to make friends with anyone because he is truly a real joy to be around. He sparks conversations with people and it would seem that were best friends.…
