Memories of Grandmother's House
Memories My grandmother’s house was a straight out of a good housekeeping magazine. Fresh roses grew along the side of the house along with snapdragons that were every color of the rainbow. The grass was always neatly cut and the color of sparkling emeralds. In the front of the house, a single tree grew with a red bird feeder attached to one of the lower branches. It had a spacious back yard with row of pear trees along the property line, a country garden and paint chipped metal swing set that was under a monstrous apple tree.

The white two-story house always reminds me of a Christmas ginger bread house. Grandma’s house was a favorite place of mine to spend summer break, when running through a water sprinkler, playing games with the neighborhood kids or riding my bike were the most important events of my day. Pulling in the driveway you could not overlook the over sized garage that sat back to the right of the house. The garage had an oily musty smell that would make you sick if inhaled for too long. To enter the house you had to go through a squeaky screen door and a timeworn wooden door first, which lead into the front porch of the house and then through yet another wooden door with rectangular glass inserts.

Grandma’s house was scattered with nostalgic baubles and forget me knots. My mother and her sister’s grew up in this house. Pictures of their childhood memories were strategically placed on walls throughout the house. My grandparents bought the house after getting married in the spring of 1939. Years later, I would call this old house home. You could always count on there being fresh baked goodies in the cookie jar. While hand decorated, birthday cakes left the house smelling like a French bakery. If the wind were blowing just right, the aroma would invade your nostrils making your sweet tooth work over time before ever entering the house.
On both each sides of the entrance to the living room sat matching his and her chairs. In the far

It was a big, sad, two-storey affair in a garden full of fruit trees…Here and there weatherboards peeled away from the walls and protruded like lifting scabs, but there was still enough white paint on the place to give it a grand air and it seemed to lord it above the other houses in the street which were modest little red brick and tin cottages.…

The old house saw the rearing of four brothers and their adopted sister. However, one of these days it, too, will give way and it will no longer be home to those who hold it in their fondest memories. But, of course, an empty house is no longer a home. It’s just the place or the house where home used to be. What remains are the lives of those who were touched by those dear ones who lived there.…

Judging by the look of it, it looked like she lived in a cookie cutter neighborhood. With all the houses looking the same, same red shutters, same white color, same brown door, and same staircase leading up to the door. But her house was different. It was… the opposite of the rest. It was a dark black house house, bigger than the rest.…

The setting of this short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” took place in a house. The narrator described the house as a “colonial mansion, a heredity estate” (926), which lead the readers to believe that it is in the south where big plantation mansions were common. When the reader thinks of this area of the United States, they think of lovely weather. “The most beautiful place! It is quite alone, standing well back from the road about three miles from the village” (926). Being three miles from town the main character does not have to worry about disturbing the neighbors, so she was free to do any activity she pleased, but she was told to do nothing and stayed in her room. There are gardens that are large and shady, full of small paths, and lined with long grape covered arbors with seats under them. However, the description seems very pleasant but it is more like the narrator’s state of mind. The narrator is a patient, who is suffering from nervous breakdown. All these things about the house are in her mind rather than it is in real. The narrator’s own clues contradict the description of the setting.…

The setting is in the southern parts of the United States. The family is driving from Georgia to Florida, and the grandmother points out various things about the area. Of particular interest was the plantation she had visited when she was girl. (401) The grandmother describes the plantation so vividly, “the house had six white columns across the front and that there was an avenue of oaks leading up to it and two little wooden trellis arbors on either side in front where you sat down with your suitor after a stroll in the garden.” (401). She uses imagery to create the scene in your mind; as she describes the plantation from her childhood, you can see…

It is the one place where I know I can relax. It has that small cottage feel to it. There are not only huge oak trees and rose bushes surrounding it, but she also has a small garden waterfall, which complements it nicely. The moment I walked inside the house, a feeling of calmness came over me. The worries of going to work and paying bills that would not ever be paid off vanished from my mind. This place is my absolute haven away from the rat race of the inner city and when I tire of crowds of people around me. This is one place where southerners with true southern hospitality…

It had beautiful, old ironwork surrounding the verandah, and dark green paint on the doors (Campbell). We toured the house jumping at every random sound because we were afraid of ghosts. The décor of the home was exquisitely decorated in the time period of the house (Campbell). When we finished our self-guided tour we walked out to stand on the verandah and admire the view. It was dark outside and nobody was in the home so we decided to spend the night here. We found two beds and quickly fell asleep.…

In the evenings light, my car rolls up the white gravel and creeps to a stop. It has been eight years since I have last seen my beloved grandmother. She owns a retirement getaway between two snow-capped mountains, in a tiny, yet glorious country ranch. Everything was so familiar and untouched. Orange and red tulips, that grandma and I planted, still surround the base of the house. The large weeping willow, that danced with the wind, still shades the garden that is on the side of the house.…

When I was young I lived in my grandmother’s house because both my mother and father had a job. The house was little bit small, but it was most comfortable place in the world. Color of the house was light yellow, so my neighbor called my home ‘yellow house’. Since my grandmother’s house was located in near mountain and also around the house, there were many trees, I could smell the scent of grass and flowers. In addition, early in the morning, I could hear the song of birds. Sometimes, the song roused me from sleep. Not only that, while I lived in the house I had 10times 4seasons and each season gave me special memory. Especially, in autumn there were 2 special events. These are Chuseok and harvesting.…

One of the first best childhood memories I really remember is the garden my father had in our backyard, vegies behind the garage to the left and a fruit garden to the right in front of the back fence. Down the right side bordering the fence were several trees, one of them being a plum tree. Right at the back of the property my father had build a three sided hut in which we could sit and have afternoon tea and where we could play all sorts of games in shelter from sun or rain. My brother and sister, or perhaps it was my Dad, helped me (or maybe I helped them) build a tree house in the first tree in that stand on the right side and we used to climb up there and hide away from the world. We were rich in that we had fresh vegetables in a huge garden behind the garage, we had black and red currants, raspberries and gooseberries growing on the right side of our backyard and Dad had arranged with someone who owned a bare section down the road from our house to be able to use it for growing sweet-corn, which he sold at the gate as well as us being able to eat all we wanted of that fresh sweet corn! And in the front of our house Dad had planted two sweet apricot trees which were our delight in summer! The neighbor grew a grapevine and kiwi-fruit vine on the boundary fence, of which we could help ourselves to any fruit that happened to grow on our side ... and there many that could be persuaded...Oh my, all this talk of food is making me hungry...all that good fresh food our parents worked to provide for us...what a…

BEEP BEEP BEEP the code was accepted and the garage door opened. All five of us walk up to the door take our shoes off, making sure we have our clean socks on. We tiptoe through the beautiful brick house, trying not to ruin the surprise. Through the washing room, through the hallway, and through the kitchen we go to find grandma drinking her cup of coffee, and grandpa reading his newspaper out loud for grandma to hear. They jump out of their chairs thrilled to see us. They hug each one of us and give us bunches of kisses. No matter how old my great grandfather gets, he still feels like he has to pick me up even though I insist that he stop. We all go in the living room and sit in our usual spots me, and my little brother on the floor where grandma has set two pillows especially just for us down there. My mom, dad, and older brother sit on the couch, facing the grandparents’. Grandma always sets a big bucket of candy by the fireplace for us. For the first few hours that we are there, we all just sit around and talk about what has been going on in life since the last time we were there. For nineteen years now, we go and visit the grandparents’ about two to three times a year. Each time never telling them when we are coming, we just surprise them every time; they get a kick out of it. We wish we could see them more often, but with our very busy schedules it makes it difficult. We have tried to get them to Rockport right next door to us, which is about three hours where they live now, so we…

    ONE HOT DAY

It was a hot Labor Day weekend 1996. My husband, children and I lived in a Farm house built in 1864, one of the oldest houses in Lane County. The house had large plank floors, two front doors off the porch and large windows some with the original panes of glass. One door lead you into the Parlor and the other lead you into the Living room. A narrow hallway in the living room went to small winding steps that took you to a great room on the second floor of the house, this is where my kids had their bedrooms. The house was surrounded with the most amazing yard. The white picket fence enclosed a grape arbor, as old as the house, and underneath the grapes there were two small rope swings attached to the arbor for my kids. Outside the fence was a large orchard filled with apples, pears and plums: and a lovely garden that I planted each summer with corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, blueberries and raspberries.…
