Memory Process Paper
Has there ever been a time were you just couldn’t remember someone names, and how embarrassed you were, or forgetting an important speech to be given to an important client for work. As a child I can remember playing a lot of cards that were meant to improve my memory. One particular game involved taking a deck of playing laying them all out, and finding the pair. The person with the most pairs was declared the winner! Memory is a skill we use daily, the stronger your memory is better. In this paper I will explain the concepts of working memory, short-term memory (STM), long-term memory (LTM) and the vital performance …show more content…
Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo (2009) stated, “Short-term memory is a system of capacity and duration” (p. 242). What takes place in those few short seconds is information waits in a holding path before being sent to our LTM. Once the information has processed in short-term memory, the information is transmitted to long-term memory (Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo, 2009). Long-term memory is a “system of memory that works to store memories for a long time perhaps even permanently” (Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo, 2009, p. …show more content…
230). Laboratory research states, STM retains on the order of five to seven items, for several seconds to less than a minute in the absence of rehearsal (Terry, 2009, p. 230). In order to have information sent to your LTM, a person needs to recall information 30 seconds to a minute (Terry, 2009, p. 230). Existing memories are abundant in sensory quality, such as color, sound, and texture (Terry, 2009, p. 230). Additionally, certain objective features have been attributed to short-term memory, which differentiate it from long-term memory (Terry, 2009, p. 230). Characteristics such as, acoustic encoding, limited capacity, limited duration, susceptibility to forgetting, and transfer to long-term memory are typically attributed to short-term memory (Terry, 2009, p. 230).
Long-Term Memory
Long term memory (LTM) refers to the continuous storing of information. The LTM has been categorized as involving semantic encoding, specifically, remembering the meaning or interpretation of a word rather than the exact word or its sound (Terry, 2009 p. 231). LTM is data that is outer perimeter of our consciousness, but can be called into “working memory” (WM) and used when needed; this data is relatively easy to recall, while there may be times when the information is difficult to recall.
