Meningocuccal Meningitis
Meningococcal meningitis is a serious and potentially fatal infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. This infection can cause death rapidly if it will not be treated. When the infection is affecting the brain or spinal cord it is named meningitis. When meningococcal bacteria invade bloodstream move across to infect meninges- “the thin lining that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord and fluid around them”. The blood vessels in the lining of the brain are damaged. Membranes contains three connective tissue layers which are pia meter, arachnoid and the dura mater. They are filled with a liquid called cerobrospinal fluid (CSF) which is there to protect the brain from physical damage, example while hitting the head. (Nasir el al., 2011, Majid

Neisseria meningitidis has the ability to multiply in CSF, after this bacteria can deliverance endotoxins, that cause inflammation and edema in the meninges and the brain tissue itself. The pressure around the brain may increased which can cause nerve damage and producing symptoms of bacterial meningitis. When the disease develops the infected person will become confused, sleepy and may lose consciousness. (Nasir el al., 2011)
