I watched two sessions conducted by two well-known psychotherapists, Carl Rogers and Albert Ellis. I chose these two sessions because of their client, Gloria. I found Gloria to be an interesting subject and because she was interviewed by the two psychotherapists, I believe that it would be easier to compare and contrast the two approaches by the psychotherapists. In order to get a better understanding of the approaches of these two clinicians, I will first give general identifying information about the clinicians and the client. Second, I will give an idea of what the overall theme of the sessions. Third, I will discuss the types of questioning the interviewer used in order to draw out the interviewee’s story, while being mindful of any micro-skills the interviewer used in the session. Fourth, I will discuss any strengths and weaknesses I noticed during the interview process. Fifth, will be a discussion of any multicultural components to the process between the interviewer and interviewee. Sixth, I will then compare and contrast the two skills both psychotherapists had. Seventh, I will discuss what skills I found helpful and not helpful, that I would incorporate in my own interviewing style. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Dr. Piper as my faculty advisor. I had Dr. Piper as a professor for my first Argosy Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) course and was excited to meet with him in a nonacademic environment to discuss different aspects of becoming a mental health counselor. We coordinated convenient time and location for both of us to meet. The meeting was very informative and constructive for me. I was able to discuss my educational future and obtain a better understanding of CMHC process and how my tentative Argosy University CMHC educational plan correlated with the future trends of the counseling process.…

Preparing for my day as professional mental health counselor takes time. When I am leaving work at the end of a busy day, I always take the time to look at my schedule for the next day. The first thing I do to prepare for my job the next day is to look at my schedule to see with whom I will be meeting with, and the time schedule for my first and last appointment. I familiarize myself with the clients I will be working with, and pull each clients file to refresh myself on our last session. This is necessary for me to prepare for the appointment. It is important for me to be prepared and show my client that I am in tune to what is going on with them. I used to do all this first thing in the morning but I have found that it works better for me if I do it at the end of my day. My being prepared helps me to give the client my full attention and helps the client to gain confidence in my abilities. It helps personalize the session between me, as the counselor, and them as the client.…

Currently I am pursing an associate degree in Mental Health Technology. Though it is not absolutely necessary to have a degree to be in this field, those mental health facilities that are looking for individuals to become a part of their organization are going for prospects that have completed a two-year program or training from an accredited institution. This lets the employer know that the individual at least meets the minimum requirements and skills for the position they are interested in. An associate degree in MHT requires classes in mental health, general psychology, biology, intervention, substance and alcohol abuse, as well as numerous prerequisites and core curriculum.…

The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) was established in order to accommodate this growing population. In 1977, AMHCA held their first annual conference. During another conference held the same year, the organization held several competency-based workshops and discussed issues concerning licensure, third-party payments, how counselors should treat special populations in the settings they found themselves working within (William, 1985). The AMHCA went on to establish the “Blueprint for the Mental Health Counseling Profession” in order to provide direction in this growing field. As AMHCA continued to grow in membership, the association was able to institute certification for counselors; publications that included a newspaper and journal; and a history of strong leadership that increased the association’s visibility (William, 1985). Finally, the 1990’s ushered in a major influence amongst the many counseling associations due to mental health counselor’s unique skills and approach, overall contributions and impact on clients’ mental health and well…

I believe that I would be the perfect candidate for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program for the reason that I have had personal experience in dealing with anxiety and depression. This in no way makes me an expert, but I will be better able to understand some of the feelings associated with these disorders. I would be able to share ways of coping that have worked for me in the past. I also have had first hand experience in dealing with children with behavior disorders my brother was diagnosed at a very young age with O.D.D, ADHD, and Bi-polar. This gives me an advantage over other candidates because I have seen first hand what techniques work best.…
