The meeting was beneficial on a several aspects of professional development. Dr. Piper explained how Argosy
courses scheduling had changed from every class being offered every semester to a more efficient and organized methodology. The discussion transitioned to how Argosy U coursework was in aliment with 20/20 Vision for the Future of Counseling Initiative. We discussed how I could strengthen the mental health identity by pursuing employment opportunities with the Veteran Administration. Improve community perception and awareness of mental health professional issues through future endeavors, professional ethics, and the importance of balancing advocating for patience wellbeing vs. using the patient to advocate the counselor’s agenda (Kaplan & Gladding, 2010). The meeting also provided me insight on when I might want to take two classes during a half semester. Also, which classes are required to complete prior to scheduling my practicum and internship. Dr. Piper answered several of my questions and gave professional advice on the benefits and drawbacks in pursuing my CAC 1 and 2 prior to graduation. It also was an opportunity for me to better understand the CACREP process and mental health certification process.
Overall, the meeting demonstrated Argosy academic and faculty advisor commitment to providing its students the necessary tools to succeed in dynamic mental health profession. Tis reaffirmed that meeting with faculty advisors is valuable for a counselor in-training to periodically reaffirm that the mental health profession is appropriate for the counselor. In addition, this is an opportunity for the faculty advisor evaluate the student’s personal and professional progress and wellness throughout the CMHC process (Smith & Kolz, 2015).
