Rowan's Clinical Mental Health Counseling Personal Statement
Most college students spend countless hours trying to decide which major to choose; which major fits them the best. However, I had the unique blessing in having my major choose me. I believe that the field of psychology of chose me from a young age. People always feel very comfortable around me and open up to me. Whenever someone I know has an issue or they are feeling emotionally distressed, they outreach to me and we talk about what is bothering them. Just knowing that I am that one person that they feel comfortable enough with to discuss their most inner sacred thoughts, and their most personal issues makes me feel extremely honored. What is driving me to pursue this program is my interest in understanding the human mind and what subconsciously …show more content…
My goal is to obtain my LPC and work under the guidance of Princess Parker who has both her LMFT and LPC to complete my additional clinical hours requirement. I would like to work as a clinician focusing on supporting and counseling children and adolescents. Working with this particular age group is where I think I can do the most good. With the knowledge that I acquire from Rowan University, I will be able to guide and teach these young children how to adequately cope with the mental and emotional issues that they may face in their daily lives. In return, they will be equipped with knowledge on how to properly deal with these issues growing into young adults. This also coincides with my previous training as a peer educator for Saint Peter’s University Counseling and Psychological Services department in which I assisted with assessing the mental health and wellness needs of students on campus, and served as liaison between students and the …show more content…
in clinical psychology and when the opportunity presents itself, I would like to open up my own private practice that focuses on not only diagnosis and treatment, but aftercare as well. What I envision is working closely with hospitals in a certain region to get involved with treating patients and build up a repertoire. Shortly after the patients are released from the hospital, I would like to have my practice and the clinicians working with me to support those patients and continuing their treatment. It is extremely important to not only ensure that people are properly diagnosed and informed about their mental health condition, but it is also important that we don’t let them fall through the cracks once they get released from the hospital. Aftercare is just as essential as the initial diagnosis, and I want to use all of the tools that I have acquired thorough my graduate studies to make sure that aftercare and treatment stays one of the top priorities when caring for patients.
Enrolling into the clinical mental health counseling graduate program will help me achieve my goals in multiple ways. Firstly, this program will equip me with the knowledge that are necessary to efficiently and properly communicate and assist patients. This includes not only learning from qualified professors like Dr. Mary Louise E. Kerwin, but getting first-hand clinical experience. It will also give me the opportunity

My personal philosophy of counseling begins and ends with patience’s and acceptances. One goal that I have is to enter into a client’s experience beside them being there with them every step of the way to help the client explore their own thoughts and feelings. I entered into the field of counseling because I have a compassion and desire to help people reach and understand their full potential. As a counselor in training, I desire to help a client identify their own problems and concerns while also demonstrating a genuine compassion for the endeavors that they may face. I believe that counseling is a crosswalk for empowerment, self-exploration, healing and growth. Ultimately, I would strive to encourage the client to delineate their own solutions. Overall, my philosophy as a counselor in training is to respect and treat each client the way that they should be treated, providing them with respect, courtesy and acceptance no matter their personal circumstance.…

Everyone who decides to enroll in college must, at some point, think about what area they want to major in. There are many things that students consider when choosing a major. Some make their decision based on what they think can make them the most money once they begin their lives in the work force. However, many students believe that if you choose a major that interests you and challenges you then you can use those skills that can help you in any career. (R. Landrum & S. Davis, 2014) Let’s face it. Employers know that when they hire someone straight out of college they are not immediately going to know everything there is to know about their position they were hired for. That is what on-the-job training is for. However, employers do expect college graduates, despite what their major was, to be excellent communicators, be well-rounded, and have the ability to be trained and have the ability to learn new things. Psychology is a degree program that produces those well-rounded, well-educated people. Psychologically literate people have an expansive vocabulary, are able to use scientific thinking, be creative when solving problems by looking at all angles, have integrity, act ethically, and are insightful about others’ behavior and their own. (R. Landrum et al, 2014) Therefore, although obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology is not a professional degree and one cannot be a Psychologist with a Bachelor’s, one gains a myriad of skills that are very marketable no matter the profession one is choosing after graduation. McGovern, Furumoto, Halpern, Kimble, and McKeachie (1991) made this point clear when they stated that “a liberal arts education in general, and the study of psychology in particular, is a preparation for lifelong learning, thinking, and action; it emphasizes specialized and general knowledge and skills.”…

Hello Dr. Aaron Oberman and fellow classmates. I’m excited to be taken this course because I’m almost at the finish line of completing my degree. I have been working in social services for almost 15 years helping adults meeting their needs while aiming at becoming self-sufficient. I enjoy my job, but I’m burned out, meaning my job no longer brings me the same satisfactions as it did 15 years ago. I reevaluated my life giving consideration to my age, family and happiness and decided it was time for a career change. As an undergrad student, I recall an instructor telling us in life most people will have a job and a career. Social Services is currently my job and school counseling will be my career. Psychology is something that has interested me for a large part of my adult life. I remember taking one of those incredibly un-informative career planning quizzes in junior high school and the result being something along the lines of counseling. Fast forward 15 years and suddenly that subject is an appealing career choice. The psychology program at ISU is listed as one of the top degree tracts in the nation. The master's degree can be for either counseling or psychology where the first focuses on individual practice and working with either groups of people, or individuals. This also pertains to school settings, behavioral facilities, and private practice. The second is more of an opening into the doctorate program and therefor a broader prospect for those who would prefer a larger variety of jobs to choose from.…
