Reflective Essay: My Personal Philosophy Of Counseling
My personal philosophy of counseling begins and ends with patience’s and acceptances. I entered into the field of counseling because I have a compassion and desire to help people reach and understand their full potential. As a counselor in training, I desire to help a client identify their own problems and concerns while also demonstrating a genuine compassion for the endeavors that they may face. I believe that counseling is a crosswalk for empowerment, self-exploration, healing and growth. Ultimately, I would strive to encourage the client to delineate their own solutions. Overall, my philosophy as a counselor in training is to respect and treat each client the way that they should be treated, providing them with respect, courtesy and acceptance no matter their personal circumstance. The most important part of the counseling process is when the counselor structures the initial interview, helps the client to define the problem(s) and develops an initial hypothesis. One of the best saying that I love to use is by Maya Angelou “If you don’t like something change it. As the counselor, we must show the client that we are there for them and not tell them what they should be doing or how they should handle a certain situation. In the future, I feel the counselor will be more supportive of the decisions his clients make. As a counselor, we may sometimes feel that the client should do something one way and try to push them towards it but in the end the client really does know what is best for them. There are so many people like Steve in The Hero’s Journey, who are told they will never be able to do something and they work hard, overcome every obstacle thrown their way and prove everyone wrong.…

When one thinks of a counselor, what ideas come to mind? To advise, to instruct, to counsel? My reaction to counseling in my early days in the profession was to receive guidance from a professional when I did not have the answers myself or when I felt “stuck” with a problem in my personal life that I felt I could not solve. What did I wish to get from seeing a counselor? The question depends on what aspect you are seeking guidance or counsel in your life. The question changed when I began to pursue a career in counseling. The question became “Why do I want to be a counselor? Who do I want to serve? What is it about me that feels that I can be effective at helping people change their lives? The questions continue and Im still seeking my “identity” in terms of this profession. What are the characteristics of a counselor/ What are their varied roles? . This paper will explore the domains of the counselor and the paths I have chosen to pursue to further my interest in this dynamic field.…

An important aspect of McMinn’s writing is that he points out the three roles that counselors hold simultaneously. First as counselors we become full participants in interpersonal interactions that happen during sessions. Second, counselor’s serve as observers that are carefully watching and evaluating what is going on in a relationship. And third, we engineer by becoming understanding and compassionate to the clients feelings (p. 60). McMinn says “The relationship we establish with clients is an important part of the healing process (p. 60)”. It is very important that as counselors we understand healthy boundaries when it comes to client-counselor relationships. There is danger when a client is over-reliant on their counselor as well as over-confidence. It is important to find a balance so that there are appropriate limitations all around which will avoid hurt and confusion.…

Today’s psychology is assembled with a huge variety of techniques, therapies, and approaches based on different models and theories of development and human behavior. When it comes to counseling, it is great to have the proper knowledge of various tools, so that a counselor’s professional behavior allows him or her to be flexible and to apply different techniques based on the individual’s problems and situational needs of every client who is seen. With there being a variety of different techniques, there are two counseling theories that are different, and their effectiveness comes from opposite sides of counseling, but they are very similar in the same way. These approaches are known as the Client-Centered Approach and the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is important that good therapists are properly equipped with both concepts and are readily aware on how both of these concepts are used so they can help the client in the best possible way needed.…

As schools become increasing diverse, cultural competence is essential. Thus, school counselors must have awareness, knowledge, and skills to help the needs of the Asian student population seek higher education. As a minority, I believe that multicultural counseling can greatly impact the lives of students. During my high school years, I felt unaccepted and not understood by my assigned high school counselor because she wasn’t cultural competence. Because my assigned high school counselor couldn’t understand why I chose to apply to only one university, Fresno State, I wasn’t able to go to her when I had questions about college. What she couldn’t understand was that although I wanted to earn an education for myself, I also wanted to stay in Fresno to help financially support my parents. Tatman (2004) states, “Counselors must acknowledge the value that the Hmong place on the family and community and the importance this value plays in all aspects of their lives”.…
