& Schulte, 1998, p 10).
Primary prevention assist individuals with skills that may help them develop skills they need. Primary prevention helps with communication skills and help with development. Primary mental health intervention work on individuals and provide information to improve mental health. When primary prevention consultation is used it help people make positive decisions. Individuals may receive indirect help from professionals.
Secondary prevention is used to control behaviors that may have a negative impact on their lives. Secondary prevention treats behaviors before it effects the client life. For example, schools provide additional assistance to students failing their classes. Implementing these programs prevent some students from failing. This could be like preventive maintenance. You provide help to prevent things from happening.
In order to help treat any problem, there need to be some form of planning. An example of prevention programs would be to provide programs for high risk individuals. For example, using the DARE program to prevent students from using drugs. Intervention focus on helping individuals with any problem. Counselors and therapist work with individual and groups to help with intervention.
Tertiary prevention programs attempt to reduce the impact of debilitating mental health problems (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 1998, p 11).
An example of tertiary would be to work on any problems that may affect health. This is one of the last methods of intervention. Tertiary prevention program focus on health problems that comes from drug addiction or stress. Drug addiction and stress leads to health problem that can cause death or long term affects.
Each form of intervention has a purpose. Primary, secondary, and tertiary works on helping clients in a clients in a certain area. It also starts with the primary intervention and ends with tertiary intervention. Professional working to provide intervention use informational consultation, or the direct methods for intervention.
Consultation used for tertiary prevention provide treatment that can help with results of health treatments that can help with results of health issues: such as preventing health issues like high blood pressure. Consultation work as intervention to reduce problems with health. “Counseling and therapy are direct interventions employed with individuals or small groups as secondary or tertiary prevention methods” (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 1998, p
11).
As I was reading the chapter I determined the role of consultation fits into my current job. Consultation is when someone work together to make plan or work on a problem. I work in a call center, and it requires us to work together. We have different problems that we must come together to solve. This could also be called collaboration. Furthermore, “collaborative process involves two or more individuals in a direct helping process” (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 1998, p 7).
Once I complete school I hope to get a job working in the Department of Human Service. I always wanted to assist people in their time of need. I look forward for in collaborating with people that have more knowledge than me. I enjoy working with others, so I can have more than one outlook at a situation. In the future I would like to work on providing interventions to help people. It could be to help people become self-sufficient. I would also like to help people develop skills that will help them improve their lives.
Primary prevention works to help people to a good mental state. Secondary prevention find ways to treat people before they harm themselves. For example, providing medication to someone that has several personalities. The medication can keep the individual from harming themselves or others. Tertiary helps control the body physically. For instance, treating someone with any illness, before it takes a toll on their body.
