History of the Counseling Profession
A. A brief description of the one historical event you selected.
Brooks and Weikel (1986) traced the historical roots of mental health counseling back to the "moral treatment" of the mentally ill that was started by Philippe Pinel, director of the Bicetre (the largest mental hospital in Paris) in 1793. In 1952, The American Personnel and Guidance Association was created as an attempt to unite and provide counselors, who were now integrating mental health & vocational counseling, with a professional association (3). While the American Mental Health Counseling Association (AMHCA) was a new form, many counselors were able to work without licensure, credentialing, standard education and training, or other marks of the clinical profession, but had to work alongside “paraprofessional” to include Social Workers and Psychologist to practice (2). Another historical event that I believe impacted this event occurred during the 1970’s time period is the Developmental Psychology design which became popular and was considered as one of the primary focuses of the counseling profession. The last historical event that I believe impacted this event was the community Mental Health Centers Act, which helped promote increased growth of counseling as a field that addressed issues within the community, such as alcoholism, substance dependency, marital problems, and family crisis (2).
The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), American Personnel and Guidance Association, which is now the American Counseling Association (ACA) had provided funds for the community, based mental health programs to increase mental health care prevention and decrease hospitalization for those who were experiencing PTSD and other mental health conditions. It is factual that the associations named above continue to contribute to shaping the identity of the counseling professional field of mental health study and its practice (2). C. Briefly reflect
