Many patients are sent there from loved ones because they can be the first to realize their family member needs help. There are many different uses for a mental hospital, but the most known reason is to treat the mentally ill. One article notes, “Hospital, an institution that is built, staffed, and equipped for the diagnosis of disease; for the treatment, both medical and surgical, of the sick and the injured; and for their housing during this process. The modern hospital also often serve as a centre for investigation and for teaching”(“Hosptial” n.pag.). The core purpose of a mental institution is to improve the lives of others who can not advance on their own. The treatments are based upon the severity of each illness and upon the individual person. The religious aspect also was apart of diagnosing someone with a mental illness. Many believe these illnesses were a sign from their God. They did not treat the people who suffered with these illnesses, for they simply dismissed them because it was shown as a sign of punishment. On the other hand some were thought to be possessed by a demon.
